McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Batman Returns (Deluxe Theatrical Edition) Wave Review and Images

It's Wednesday and you know what that means: ToyFarce review!

This week, we're having a look at the DC Multiverse Batman Returns (Deluxe Theatrical Edition) wave from McFarlane Toys! This was supposed to be one of Christmas/Holiday season reviews, but the chaos of the global post system denied that. Because yes, Batman Returns is a Christmas movie. Obviously! Now, they're here. I only got the basic wave, without the exclusive Max Shreck, the Penguins sets or the Duck vehicle, thinking that they'd arrive faster before Christmas. Oh well...

We're in the last few months of the DC Multiverse line at McFarlane Toys, before the DC Comics franchise switches to Mattel in July, and it seems that the folks at McFarlane Toys have decided to treat us with all the figures we wanted (or didn't know we wanted) for that last stretch. I would have never expected getting a wave from Batman Returns in 2025, and yet here we are!

Returns1

Batman comes with his Batman Returns outfit (duh), 2 extra hands, his grapple gun and a batarang, along with the stand and card. He has a "soft goods" wired cape that has to be one of the worst capes I have seen in a long time. First, the cape is too short and the material doesn't really move well. It's the same shiny material as the ones we had from Kenner in the 90s, except it has wires that don't really hold it in place. It's uncanny, we were so busy wishing for soft goods capes on those figures that we forgot that it could also be implemented badly... The figure does look great on a shelf, though. A fine Batman! I kinda always prefered the Batman Returns suit to the 89 one, with the armor looking abs rather than sculpted muscles in the suit.

Catwoman has, by far, the best likeness for a movie character figure in that line. It's a tiny Michelle Pfeiffer. Her outfit looks great, the paint looks great. When they deliver, they deliver. She comes with a whip and a taser (for Max Shreck), and the usual stand and card. For a figure with the same articulations as the other figures in that line, she can move quite well. It's a great figure, and I understand why I saw it in many Top 10s of 2025.

The Penguin is the cherry on top for that wave. Obviously, it has Danny DeVito's physique, so it won't move like the Catwoman figure, but he looks pretty great. He comes with a soft goods coat (kinda like felt), a top hat and an umbrella + stand and card. I feel like he could have come with more accessories... I would have loved if he came with a penguin, but they decided to sell them separately, which I understand. Maybe an open umbrella with a spiral on it would have been nice too? Maybe more hands... or a half-eaten fish? (Eww...) The coat can be removed and he's wearing the outfit from the movie.

I will hunt down the penguins and Max Shreck at some point, but I love that in the last few years, we got figures from all Batman movies, from Adam West or '89 to The Batman (2022), including Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. I don't expect we'll get more of those anytime soon, so it was a nice treat from that DC Multiverse line.

Those figures are currently sold out from most places, but keep an eye on our sponsors like BigBadToyStore or Nerdzoic as they do sometimes pop up in stock. Nerdzoic currently has the Penguin in stock, for example!

Oh yes yes! A nice treat to all fans. I'm glad we got a nice Catwoman, it's just a natural bond of mine. The cape looks to be an interesting part and not in a good way, but at least, MOC fans or people who might just pose the characters next to each other got a moderate version. It's always good to read about my favourite Batman movie and of course it's a very cool review of yours!

Great review. Shreck, in my opinion, is the best figure in this set but all of them looked really good.

Small correction: The McFarlane license was extended to December 31. So it doesn't end in July.
