Iron Lantern By Chris Morada

This week's TNI Cool Custom is of a "Iron Lantern" figure by Chris Morada.

Here is how Chris describes the making of it:

" As part of my Iron Man custom series project I did a search on the net for different versions of Iron Man and came across Amalgam's Iron Lantern 5700. Anyways after seeing the IL 5700 I said to my self, "Hmmmn? I should make a modern Iron Lantern character, more of proto type like. So for this custom figure I used the Iron Man Mark III 6" action figure as the base figure.

The first thing that I did was crack open this figure and carefully installed two 5mm 16000MCD LED inside, one for the chest and the other for his eyes, YES not only his chest glows but also his eyes! By the way these LED's are intensely bright, I love it! After I added a nice little On and Off switch on his back. After installing an O&F switch I installed an internal battery holder that would hold 3 LR621 button cell batteries to operate the LED's properly. You can easily access the battery by removing the battery cover located on his back.

Another thing I want to point out is his helmet and head. With his helmet I basically took the another Iron Man action figure that came with the detachable helmet and modified it in order to be able to have that detachable mask. In order for his eyes to glow, I used a crystal clear acrylic scrap block and animated his head on a special animation program, then was later translated to machine codes and the scrap acrylic was sculptured using my mini milling machine that I converted to CNC. Anyways I carefully painted his with different shades of flesh colors to give it that realistic look.

Once all the parts were put together I used little bit of apoxie sculpt to smooth things out and sanded all the joint out to prevent paint rubs. As usual I use Testors Model Master Acrylic paint due to its body’s' soft plastic parts. I only use high quality paint to prevent paint fades, chipping, cracking, etc... I must say that this is a masterpiece, a work of art that took me almost two weeks to complete!
