The greatest adventure of all time begins with "Star Trek," the incredible story of a young crew's maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. In the midst of an incredible journey full of optimism, intrigue, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind.

Star Trek IMAX The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals born worlds apart. One, James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine), a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy, a natural-born leader in search of a cause. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), grows up on the planet Vulcan, an outcast due to his half-human background, which makes him susceptible to the volatile emotions that Vulcans have long lived without, and yet an ingenious, determined student, who will become the first of his kind accepted into the Starfleet Academy.

Kirk and Spock could not be more different. Yet, in their quest to figure out who they really are and what they have to give to the world, they soon become competitive cadets-in-training. With their drastically opposite styles, one driven by fiery passion, the other by rigorous logic, they also become defiant, contentious adversaries, each equally unimpressed with the other, each going all out to be among the special few chosen to join the crew of the most advanced starship ever created, the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The crew is headed by Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood). Joining him are the ship's Medical Officer Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban); the man who will become the ship's Chief Engineer, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (Simon Pegg); Communications Officer Uhura (Zoe Saldana); experienced Helmsman Sulu (John Cho); and the 17-year-old whiz kid Chekov (Anton Yelchin). All will face a harrowing first test that will set in motion the loyalty, camaraderie, daring and good humor that will bind them forever.

In the midst of it all, Kirk and Spock will come face-to-face with an undeniable destiny: a need to forge an unlikely but powerful partnership, enabling them to lead their crew to boldly go where no one has gone before.

When Star Trek is concerned I go with TV ratings not Box Office receipts

That's great, if you're a fan, it doesn't mean squat if you're part of Paramount or an investor associated with Paramount. More can be made with one successful movie than an entire series run if the movie made correctly/a movie that draws in a huge repeat crowd.

Ratings + money

The network can dictate the cost of advertising and this is over a season of 6 months while movie by then are out of theaters

Just saw the new movie and really enjoyed it! I did notice that Kirk seemed to have a bit of a habit of nearly falling off things though - he ended up clinging on to the edge of a cliff, the drill and something else I think as well. Looking forward to the sequel already.

In fact, JJ is a HUGE Star Wars fan:

R2-D2 in New Star Trek Film

Stark Trek movie maker JJ Abrams likes Star Wars so much he has hidden R2-D2 in certain scenes in the new movie. Can you spot R2-D2 in the new Star Trek movie?

If so you could win big. By big I mean you could win an official prop from the movie.

To test if you have the chops for this, first go to the Cadet Training Facility and test your skills. Then go see the actual movie and look for R2-D2.

To enter the, send an email with the subject line Star Trek Easter Egg Sweepstakes, to facebook@paramount.com. For all the details, check out the official Star Trek Facebook page.

There's nothing to be ashamed of as a Star Trek fan that those in the creative leads are taking notes from one of the most successful movie franchises of all time.

For slip ups the one I originally noticed was that the crew of the Kelvin had Delta symbols on their uniforms which at that time each ship had its own unique symbols, the Delta beloging to the Enterprise and this was the point were time had changed so anything up to this point should have been part of the "Prime" unverse.

Ah, good point about the symbols! We can explain away all kinds of minor changes because the timeline is messed up... but not yet at that point. Although... didn't they mention in Enterprise a few times that they wondered if the timeline had been changed by all the "time war" stuff? So perhaps Enterprise created a new alternate timeline, which Nero then further altered... taking us even farther away from the original series. I'm sorta grasping at straws there, but what the heck! Stupid time travel and its inevitable paradoxes!

I did like the blue uniform that they had Papa Kirk in - it was a nice bridge between the Enterprise uniform, and the original Trek look.

Another minor quibble I had is, isn't Bones supposed to be a good deal older than Kirk? I suppose we never had his age officially established, but Deforest Kelly was about 10 years older than Shatner, and Urban is about 10 years older than Pine... so why did we see Urban as McCoy dressed in his cadet's uniform at one point, which to me put him close to Kirk in age? Maybe McCoy just entered the service at an older age than Kirk? Or did I miss something?

I also liked explaining the "Bones" nickname. No one calls a doctor a "sawbones" anymore, so that doesn't really work. With Deforest Kelly, we could assume it was just that he was skinny, but Karl Urban really ain't skinny, so a new explanation was needed.

Anyhow, I didn't see any errors that detracted from my enjoyment of the film. The movie makers were very good about respecting the details of the old Trek, but it's still fun to see if I can catch any tiny mistakes! It's part of the fun of being a Trekkie!

l believe ya missed somethin

When McCoy first shows up, it is implied that he is much other than the others when he said that he doesn't want to go to space but has to because his ex wife "took the earth with her during the divorce"

Bones also said that he is already a dr, which implies that he is a bit order than Kirk..

Wow I thought the Wrath of Khan did better but I remembered E.T also came out in the summer of 82

Look at the number of theaters showing Star Trek compared to Khan as well.. ~4,000 to ~1,000 times have changed a lot since the 1980's. The number of theaters that showed Star Wars compared to Episode III were also vastly different.

Something else that's interesting:

Star Wars Lifetime Gross Total (7 films): $2,217,773,316

Lifetime Gross Total (11 films): $950,424,102

Star Trek done is a more Star Wars fashion: Star Trek Par. $194,828,380

Last Traditional Star Trek movie: Star Trek: Nemesis Par. $43,254,409

Paramount and JJ are on to something..

Bones is older than Kirk, if you go back and look at the scene where they meet, Bones is clearly upset about having to join the service but he doesn't seem to have a choice after his divorce. This isn't uncommon in the real world for the service or for college students. I had a fellow classmate in college that was in his 50's.. he went back to school after being laid off and going through a divorce. So essentially Bones in the newer film reflects a more realistic view on life which is nice.
