Mattel Q&A For March 01, 2010: Battel Cat To Return & The Possibility Of MOTUC Vehicles On The Horizon Addressed, Plus More

by Jay Cochran
March 01, 2010
TNI: Many collectors seem upset that entire waves (such as DCUC wave 14) will be exclusive to a single retailer like Wal-Mart. Could you explain why these exclusive releases are necessary for the success of the line?

Mattel: Almost all major retail lines have exclusive or “customized” product for major retailers. Doing special product for one retailer is part of the overall marketing program to sell in the main line to that retailer. It allows them to have unique offerings to draw in customers to their toy aisle!

TNI: How does sculpting a WWE Legends figure differ from that of a regular WWE figure? With the regular figures as I understand it, there is actual laser scanning of the wrestler that takes place to capture their likeness, but with many Legends, they are either older or in some cases no longer with us. So how do you go about capturing those wrestlers likeness for these figures and make them look accurate?.

Mattel: There are many classic superstars that we are unable to scan. In those instances they are sculpted traditionally. We think it is a testament to the skill of the people working a line when it is difficult to tell the difference between what is started with digital data, and what is done from scratch!

TNI: Battle Cat seemed to sell out in record time for the February 16th sale. First I would assume this bolds well for the future of larger scale figures, and second is there any chance Battle Cat will be re-released at a later date?

Mattel: Yes, we will re-release Battle Cat in fall 2010.

TNI: We asked about the possibility of doing 12" MOTUC figures in a past Q&A, and you said one of the things holding you back was that you didn’t have a 12" Sculpt in the MOTUC style. Now that you seem to have a MOTUC type sculpt in 12" Scale with the Tytus figure, does this mean the door is open for a 12" MOTUC line?

Mattel: While we do not have plans at this time for a full 12” line, the Tytus body does give us the needed buck to do other giants in the future!

TNI: Going back to how well Battle Cat seemed to sell last month, does this help push the idea that MOTUC vehicles could also sell well on Mattycollector.com?

Mattel: Yes, due to the quick sell out of Battle Cat we are evaluating how we might be able to do some of the smaller vehicles. No promises yet!

We sent in our next round of questions to Mattel on March 1 and will get answers back by March 5, 2010. If you would like to post questions for us to possibly send to Mattel for a future round, CLICK HERE.
