The End Of MOTUC Is Near?

by Jay Cochran
June 21, 2014
Yesterday Mattel made a cryptic almost Game of Thrones like announcement about the end of their Masters of the Universe Classics line which apparently will draw to a conclusion next year, at least in it's current subscription form. Whether this is truely the end remains to be seen but I am sure we will be hearing more details next month at the San Diego Comic Con.

They should do a thunder at line since Bandi isn't using them.

I think the mistake I and a lot of other people like me have made is always thinking of a Brand Manager as doing what's best for the brand rather than doing what they want while still not destroying the brand. You can't deny MOTUC's success (which is what Scott and his bosses would quickly point to), but you also can't deny that with some different (sometimes obviously better) decisions along the way, it could have been even greater. I know I never would have stopped subbing and would have re-upped for 2015 already had the latter been the case.

The "focus" of this toy line has always been and will always be what Neitlich wants out of it. Early on, his wants and our wants overlapped, and people were content with the line's offerings. Later on, it went off in the super-obscure directly, and all but the hardcore fans were left scratching their heads.

Face it, Neitlich wanted Nepthu (and others like him) more than he wanted Evil Seed. Just like he didn't want a Filmation headed Hordak.

But hey, how's the Gorpo treating you?

Ok with it ending.

I would like to hope that they pump out the last few wanted figures next year to finish their plan.

Not a lot of really must haves left.

Squeeze, Lizard Man and an Evil Seed would be the one's I really have an interest in seeing before the end.

When MOTUC was just getting going, I bet we all would have been shocked if someone told us Evil Seed wouldn't have a figure by 2015 and may not get one at all. After Marzo and the Green Goddess and He-Ro, it seemed like a sure thing. But then they started with Vikron and the Fighting Foe Men and the guy that pilots the Jet Sled instead of figures similar in "toy background" to Marzo and He-Ro. I'm sure Mattel would say those were fan demanded, but I still think they came about because of a shift in focus (and a lack thereof, too).

All I know is, I am so glad that "Classics" is finally ending. I love the line, and I have for the most part enjoyed collecting the figures... but the FUN factor is hindered by the poor QC and just the mere fact that YOU KNOW WHO is in charge of it... It will be a day of celebration when the last vintage figure arrives at my doorstep.

Like and ditto

Is it really that hard to refrain from being a total a__hole?
