2008 SDCC Day 1: Mattel

by Jay Cochran
July 24, 2008
Not much new from Preview Night at the Mattel booth other then the two lovely ladies dressed as Teela and Evil Lynn from MOTU. We have also added better images of the Two Face figure on display for Mattel's Dark Knight line. Tomorrow Mattel will be holding panels for both DC and MOTU so we expect to have some new goodies for you then.

Is anybody else disappointed by the JLU offerings?

I know it's only Day 2, so maybe some really BIG surprises are coming up ...and maybe I've been out of the loop and this is all there's going to be... but it seems to me, we're seeing nothing that we haven't already seen or been told about for the past year and a half! Where's Cheetah? Where's Captain Marvel? Yeah. I read about Firestorm in '09. Will we have to buy another Green Lantern and Batman in order to get him too?

I don't know but it seems like Mattel is throwing all their fire behind Infinite Heroes and leaving JLU to die the slow death its been dying. I haven't seen a line actively drive its collectors away like this since Masters of the Universe back in 2000.

Did anyone catch that Hal Jordan on display too? I think he was in a pic at another site. Oh, we can't buy him though! It's one of those rare Hal Jordans that were Mattel party favors a few years ago. Why display this and rub in the fact that Mattel still childishly refuses to produce a figure everyone has been clamoring for?

"What? People want a Hal Whatisname? Nah! Paint red stripes on Superman, package him with Wonder Woman and the Flash, and let them buy that instead!" ---Mr. Mattel, CEO, Mattel

The He-man figure is really cool, but maybe his face is a bit too Conan....at least to me.
