Nintendo Fears No Handheld

Nintendo Co. Ltd president Satoru Iwata said in a recent statement given at the Tokyo headquarters of the Foreign Correspondents Club, that Nintendo will not lose the imminent handheld war against Sony. This follows the successful launch of the Nintendo DS handheld game system, Iwata states has been flying off store shelves in both the United States and Japan.

Sales has already hit one million units since the launch on November 21 in the United Staes. In Japan, it has reached 500,000 units just four days since the launch. Iwata stated, "To meet strong demand, we will ship 2.8 million Nintendo DS consoles by the end of December, about 800,000 units higher than we had initially targeted."

Iwata attributes the reason behind the successful launch lies with Nintendo's dedication to innovation. Graphics and powerful game consoles are no longer enough to satisfy consumers. Its going take game systems capable of providing new levels of interaction between the player and the software to be successful in the coming times.

Iwate feels this approach will set Nintendo DS levels above the Sony PHP.

Time will only tell as the Sony PHP sets to launch on December 12, 2004.
