PSP To Function As PS3 Remote Control

PSP (Playstation Portable, Sony’s handheld video gaming console), will function as a remote control for the Playstation 3 console when the next generation console is released next year.

As the PS3 supports only Bluetooth wireless controllers, it lacks the controller ports found on the PS2 and Xbox 360. The PSP will therefore interface with the PS3 console via WiFi, and allow gamers to browse files and folders on the PS3 from the comfort of the sofa. However, the PSP will not function as a game controller for the PS3.

Both the Playstation 3 and the PSP will use Memory Stick Duo cards, making it possible to transfer photos and films between the two devices. It is unclear at this stage whether Sony will allow playback of UMD movies on the PS3 via the PSP, or whether PSP owners will be able to connect to Sony’s planned online gaming network and participate in multiplayer online gaming. Interestingly, the new Microsoft Xbox 360 console is also offering gamers PSP compatibility.
