So what’s the story behind the “sepia tone” Babe Ruth figure?
Mark Weber; McFarlane Staff Member is quoted as saying:
It’s the final result of creativity meeting necessity. Whenever we make a 6-inch Sports Picks figure with pinstripes on the uniform, the stripes are actually “grooved” into the plastic, which also means they’re grooved into the mold. Without making a new mold (which takes time and is quite expensive) that limits our options when choosing a “chase version” for the figure – since the pinstripes have to stay. That’s one reason why our Yogi Berra chase figure in the first Cooperstown Collection series had a hat change for his chase figure – to keep the pinstripe jersey on both versions.
Originally we considered adding a numeral to Ruth’s back for his chase version. The Yankees started wearing numbers on their uniforms in 1928, after numbering the lineup according to their batting order (ever wonder why Lou Gehrig wore #4 and Ruth wore #3?) but the problem arose that this sculpt depicts a younger Ruth – he was much larger by the time New York put numbers on their jerseys. With the gray jersey and the “uniform numeral” option both out, we decided to go with a “sepia tone” paint scheme – to simulate the newsprint photos of the era. Very few sports fans in the 1920s and 1930s actually got to see Ruth play in person, so newspaper photos were really the only way they ever got to see the best athletes in the world.
