'The Village' Takes Top Spot At Movies

by Outsiders
August 2, 2004
M. Night Shayamalan's horror film, The Village, topped the weekend box office charts with an estimated $50.8 million, while last week's top films dropped by more than 50% led by Catwoman's precipitous 63.6% decline to a $6 million total. Catwoman, which cost between $90 and $100 million to produce, will require hefty DVD sales to break even. Meanwhile the live action Thunderbirds film, based on the cult favorite supermarionation TV series, opened in the number twelve position and averaged a dismal $1290 per screen at some 2057 theaters. Spider-Man 2 dropped 43% to $8.5 million while running its cumulative total to $344.3 million. It now seems impossible that Spider-Man 2 will catch Shrek 2, which finished at #14 and ran its year's best total to $432 million.
