According to The Hollywood Reporter, a battle royale is shaping up for the July 4th weekend next year, with both Marvel's Fantastic Four and Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds (starring Tom Cruise) fighting for essentially the same audience over the extended holiday weekend. Fantastic Four's July 1 release date was announced first with War of the Worlds in a spoiler role with a later announcement of a planned June 29th (Wednesday) opening.
It's not clear that both movies will be ready by their scheduled release dates. Fantastic Four is already shooting, so is more likely to make the date, but War of the Worlds isn't scheduled to begin production until November.
