March 20, 2005
DreamWorks' The Ring Two, starring Naomi Watts, opened in first place with an estimated $36 million from 3,332 theaters for a strong average of $10,804 per location. If estimates hold, the sequel marks the third-biggest opening for the month of March, trailing just behind Robots ($36.045 million) and 2002's Ice Age ($46.3 million). The first film debuted to just $15 million, but good word of mouth enabled the film to reach $129 million domestically.
20th Century Fox's Robots dipped 39.5% and to second place with $21.8 million. The $75 million-budgeted animated comedy, from the creators of Ice Age, has assembled $66.9 million in two weeks.
Disney's The Pacifier added $12.5 million in its third weekend in third place. The $56 million Vin Diesel family comedy has earned a solid $72.3 million so far.
Fourth place belonged to newcomer Ice Princess, starring Michelle Trachtenberg, which made only $7 million from 2,501 theaters.
Columbia Pictures' Hitch earned another $6.6 million in its sixth weekend for an impressive total of $159.4 million. The Will Smith romantic comedy was produced for about $70 million.
Also, Woody Allen's new film, Melinda and Melinda, was released in just one theater and collected $74,000. It will be released wider this Wednesday.
