Rumors have been circulating about the status of the movie based on Alan Moore's classic 1986 graphic novel, The Watchmen which has been in preproduction in the UK for the last few months with Paul Greengrass scheduled to direct. A new story at Variety seems to confirm rumors that the production may be in trouble.
The real question comes from the changing of the guard at Paramount Pictures, as the company gets a new chief in Brad Grey with Gail Berman coming in as studio president. The movie's budget was slated to be in the $100 million range, scheduled to start shooting in June, but the story at Variety mentions the budget needing to be cut and some crew members having been released.
Ever since the release of the graphic novel by DC Comics in 1986, there has been talk about a movie based on it, with many different scripts and directors being involved as it floated in and out of development. This is the closest the film has come to fruition during this time.
Producer Larry Gordon and studio spokesperson Nancy Kirkpatrick both insist that the project is still happening.
