It's
Wednesday and you know what that means:
ToyFarce review!
This week, we're having a look at the
second wave of
Savage Crucible figures by
Harvinger Studios. The first wave, which we reviewed last year and was a hit, had the
Lemurians (
or lizard people), and this second wave focused on
human characters. Not being a huge fan of human or barbarian characters in my fantasy figures, I thought I would like this wave a bit less than the first one.
I have never been more wrong. And that
Frank Frazetta tribute figure...
Bravo!
Review of the first wave of Savage Crucible figures here!
Just like the first wave, the second wave came in a nice decorated
shipper box, and I'm sure the delivery guy was a bit jealous when he gave it to me (
let me believe, please). This wave had
5 characters and
2 Accessory packs. Each packaging has info about the characters, as well as a hidden pack including a
trading card + a surprise
randomized weapon hidden in a black bag at the bottom of the packaging. I thought the cards were already a nice little bonus, but the extra weapons are gorgeous (
pic below).

First,
Who-man, one of the main characters from the first comic book, is a stunning figure. He comes with
2 head sculpts,
3 pairs of hands, a
sword and a
shield. The sculpt and paint are amazing, especially his armor. This figure screams '
hero'.

Krieger The Shunned is another great looking figure. Definitely a sleeper hit. I thought it would be the figure I care the least about and it ended up being one of my favorites of the entire line. He comes with
2 head sculpts (
with and without helmet),
3 pairs of hands, a
sword, a
sheath and a
small axe. It really has
Elder Scrolls character vibes, and looks awesome.

Jaeger, the lycan bounty hunter, was a figure that had caught my eye early on, before the
Kickstarter campaign had even started. There were pics of the prototype holding his crossbow that made me want him right away.
Jaeger comes with
2 heads (
hooded and without hood),
3 pairs of hands, a
soft goods cloak, a
plastic hood for around his neck, his
crossbow, a
sword, a
sheath and a
knife. I didn't remember it had a soft goods wired cloak so it exceeded my expectations. Some parts (
shoulder pauldrons, sheath and sword) need to be removed in order for the cloak to sit nicely, but once it does, it looks great.
Chef kiss.

The
Frank Frazetta's Warrior with Ball and Chain figure shines with its simplicity.
A warrior, with a ball and chain. Okay, it also comes with
extra hands, a
shield, a
sword, a
knife and a
soft goods wired cape, but you know what I mean. The figure had great articulations and can hit the pose from the original drawing. It's just a simple, great looking figure, which will display nicely anywhere you put it. My only nitpick is that it could have come with some sort of
rock accessory base (
with a peg, for example) so that he can be in that pose all the time.

Nashorn the Disinherited. Now that's a name that screams '
evil', doesn't it?
Someone had a child, named it Nashorn and decided to deny him his inheritance! All jokes aside, another banger figure from that wave. He comes with
3 pairs of hands, a
sword with
sheath and a
knife with
sheath. It's the one figure where I wish he could have had a bit more, like a gloomy looking axe or something. Perhaps a nice cape also (red, obvioulsy). Still, he looks awesome. His
helmet makes me think he's playing in the band '
Slaughter to Prevail' also. A sick, evil looking figure.

The
Raider Pack has accessories that will go with the human figures. It has
2 heads, a
helmet, a
full armor to turn any figure into another character,
weapons,
skulls and
2 pairs of hands (including middle finger hands, which is always a fine addition). From the trading cards I got with this set, I had 2 cards showing other characters, a bald man with an eye patch (
Baros Bale-Eye) and another raider with helmet (
Falko), and I used the Krieger figure and switched parts with it in order to make them.
It's not much, but it's honest work.

Baros Bale-Eye and Falko
The
Conquest Pack mostly has accessories for
Jaeger and
Nashorn (
but then again, you can use them with whatever you like). There is a nice
head for Jaeger, with braids and a man bun (
that lycan cleans up nice!), along with
helmets for 2 different characters using Nashorn's body (
again, from the trading cards, I could make Naraka the Undying and a Tavros guard).
Also, middle fingers <3 There is also a
shield and plenty of
weapons, including a
gnarly hook with a peg on which you can attach a head, for
Jaeger to collect his bounty, complete with all the details on the insides of the neck.
Bon appétit!

'Normal' Nashron the Disinherited + his mood
Surprisingly, this wave was a vast improvement over the first wave (
which was already a fantastic wave to begin with). I imagine the folks at
Harvinger Studios (
Hi Rob!) scoured the internet for all the feedback they could get their hands on and applied it for the second wave. The plastic feels different, the parts are easier to swap, the accessories and armor parts are much easier to handle,... There is definitely a gap in terms of quality between the two waves. The
3 pairs of hands each figures come with are
open,
closed with articulation going sideways, or
closed with articulations going up or down, which is extremely handy when posing them with swords and weapons. The
bonus trading cards and
bonus weapons are just the cherry on top an already very delightful action figure...
cake? I went "
all in" during the
Kickstarter campaign which means there is still one wave coming my way, the
Pirahnoids (
or fish people), and if they continue improving in between waves, that wave is going to be
insane.
