The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz has promised that the show's second season will end with a shocking twist.

"We're just gonna get nuttier and zanier, and we're going to end the season with a real live cliffhanger," he told E! Online.

"Unlike last year, which was a little bit more of an emotional cliffhanger that had to sustain us over a really long period of time, this year is gonna be a more honest-to-goodness 'I can't believe they just did that!' shocker."

According to the National Enquirer, said 'shocker' will be the death of Caleb Nichol, played by Aussie actor Alan Dale.

Viewers will be left wondering whether Caleb died from heart failure or was poisoned by a drink served up by his wife Julie, from whom he is divorcing.

The magazine added that there still remains a possibility that Caleb could survive his ordeal, although with Dale already having signed on for a new comedy show, it seems unlikely.

The finale will also herald the return of Oliver, a much-loathed character from season one, who holds the teens at gunpoint in the Bait Shop.
