HBO Folds Up Its 'Carnivale' Tent

HBO has officially pulled the plug on its cult drama "Carnivale" after two seasons.

"We have decided not to renew 'Carnivale,'" HBO entertainment head Carolyn Strauss said in a statement to the press. "We feel the two seasons we had on the air told the story very well, and we're proud of what everyone associated with the show accomplished."

A modest 1.7 million viewers on average watched the show's second season, well behind such current offerings as "Deadwood" (2.9 million on average during its airings paired with "Carnivale") but slightly above "The Wire's" season three numbers (1.6 million on average).

"Obviously, I'm disappointed," executive producer Howard Klein told Daily Variety. "It's a show I'm incredibly proud of. There are so many positives that came out of this experience."

Daniel Knauf created the series and also served as an executive producer along with Klein.
