New TMNT Turtle Movie Stars Boxset Revealed

December 24, 2020
Playmates Toys has teased the coming of another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Retro figure boxset with this new image they released. While not 100% confirmed, it is looking like this will be released as a new Target exclusive.

The set seems to be based on the original Playmates Toys 1991 Movie Stars Turtle figures.

We assume like previous sets of this type, each figure will be packed individually inside the box with retro like cardbacks. Stay-tuned for more details as they become available.

I remember as a kid wishing I had these. I don't see myself getting them now, though, they haven't aged well at all.

Okay, I thought I sniffed the faint whiff of bull$#!+ off of this set, but I wasn't entirely certain, so I Googled.  Yep.  That is, indeed, BULL$#!+ I smelt!

This isn't just the same old "Playmates milking the old molds" garbage.  This is EXTRA SPECIAL GRADE A PREMIUM garbage.

THAT is not Movie Splinter.  THAT is just a shite repaint of the Splinter figure from the regular line.  THIS IS MOVIE STAR SPLINTER.  Original flocked release, or unflocked painted rerelease.

Also, note how Movie Splinter has a full robe, with sleeves, while $#!+ Poser Box Set Splinter just has the same old one-piece with holes.  And of course, Movie Splinter has a completely different rack of accessories, while SPBS Splinter has the same old crap basic Splinter comes with.

Putting aside the fact that Playmates is just rereleasing the same figures as they did 30 years ago . . . putting aside the fact that this could easily be a proper box set of 8 figures and include Tokka and Rahzar, for a comparable price . . . this isn't even a COMPETENT set!

This is why I haven't bought a Playmates toy in nearly a decade. *facepalm*

We first told you about this set coming back in December, and now show below are official images for the new TMNT Turtle Movie Stars Boxset from Playmates Toys. The set which is being sold as a Target store exclusive features figures of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, Super Shredder and Splinter. The 6-pack of blister carded figures comes packed out in the sewer subway car illustrated closed box that served as the "Lair" for the Turtles in the movie. The set will cost $44.99 and is listed on the Target website though not currently available for purchase. The set will also be sold in physical stores.

I always thought these were cool figures, when they came out they were crazy good looking, they still look alright, but the spots I never realized were terrible looking, they still hold up sculpt wise I guess but why would you really want these when NECA gave us the best movie figures ever... Nostalgia I guess , I'm sure people will want these, me however nope.

Playmates just re-release all your old 80s and 90s non turtle figures FFS. I want to build my classic collection again.

These look really bad, they look like they are on drugs and the painted spots makes them look like they are infected with something.

I'd like to see them do figures more like the MOTU ORIGINS. At least take the old and update.

Even that seems to be too much for Playmates, their thing is to hold the license and let someone else develop product, but don't release it to mass retail market, we don't want competition for whatever we go to release ourselves later.

I had these figures back in the day. The sculpts were fantastic but that whole rubbery feel gimmick was bad. They couldn't hold there weapons and couldn't stand up at all. If they do repro them please use better plastic.

Why not develop new product instead of bringing back the old?, and to top it all off, Target's exclusive...heck, Playmates should lose the license.

I'd like to see them do figures more like the MOTU ORIGINS. At least take the old and update. I've been finding these reproductions pretty boring. It's nice holding a tmnt figure with new types of plastic and paints. But that's it. The retros still look better.
