Long before there were those crappy Aliens Vs. Predator movies, there was actually a pretty good comic book series from Dark Horse comics that first pitted the two fierce extraterrestrial species against one another. (If you never read them, you should try to find the trades.) Ever since then, I have always thought it would be cool to have figures for them. Now I know NECA isn’t the first company to have released Aliens or Predator figures; Kenner I believe was the first and McFarlane Toys also had offerings in this area, but now NECA brings us this very cool two-pack as a Toys R’ Us exclusive. NECA actually has been releasing a whole line of figures based on the Predator movies which appear to be very cool, but this two-pack offers the Alien along for the ride.
The two-pack on Toys R’ Us shelves now features one 9" Alien warrior figure and one 8" Predator warrior. Both figures feature a fair amount of articulation such as ball-jointed shoulders and joints on the ankles that allow you to pose the figures in a number of battle poses. The Alien also has a tail made from a bendy-type plastic allowing you to pose it in an infinite number of ways. If I had one wish here, it would be articulation in the chest areas.
The figures are fairly basic in the accessories area. The pack comes with an Alien and Predator Skull. The Predator also has removable shoulder cannon that can be turned in multiple directions. The Predator has a retractable claw, although this is not removable from the figure. The figure also has two bandoliers containing skulls of the Predator’s recent kills and a removable bone necklace. A removable helmet would have been nice for this figure, but this seems to be offered only on the single-carded Predators. The Alien has a mouth that opens and closes with a retractable inner mouth.
Where these figures shine the most is in the details. The netting on the Predator and the details on the headsculpt (down to the spots on his head and his hair) are quite remarkable. He also has a self-destruct timer on his left wrist with some nice details, but there are no working parts here. The Alien has some very nice detailing as well, especially on the top of its head which has a transparent-looking effect.
If you are new to collecting Aliens or Predator figures or just want to increase your already growing armies, this new set from NECA will make a nice addition to your collection. Look for it on shelves now with a retail price of $24.99.
