Well, hundreds of millions were spent on far worse movie concepts... so why not MOTU?
I agree that it will never receive the budget and attention that it deserves... but it should. I've said it in other threads, MOTU has the potential to be an epic masterpiece of a saga. It's just that most people can't think outside the box and look past it's history of campiness.
Glad to hear Chu is no longer involved, but at this point... I don't think any filmmaker has the ability to do this film justice. UNLESS...
...I don't think live action is the way to go with MOTU. They need to take lessons from James Cameron's AVATAR. If it was full CGI with motion capture, there would be no limit to what they could achieve with a MOTU film(s).
Audiences don't tend to respond terribly well to full motion capture CGI and nothing but (the Uncanny Valley effect starts to kick in). Even Avatar had plenty of human characters in the mix at various points in the movie. Certainly though, MotU would pretty much demand some mocapped CGI characters.
Beyond that, it's doubtful they'll devote the kind of budget necessary for something on that scale to a very unproven (on the big screen) franchise without someone like James Cameron or Steven Spielberg on board (which seems unlikely to happen). Which is probably one of the big reasons this movie hasn't already happened: Trying to make it happen on a budget.
I agree. I don't think this will receive the budget to pay for a lot of CGI, especially the quality and quantity of CGI that we would like to see to really do it justice.
I would love to see a MOTU movie, but I don't think I've heard one good thing about the one currently in development. The first idea for a MOTU remake was a soldier named Adam who stumbled through some warp in the Middle East, I believe. Seriously.

Not too big a surprise. He hinted at this a couple weeks back in an interview. Probably just decided to focus on G.I. Joe 3 (which I guess might be getting fast-tracked).
MotU is probably going to remain in development hell for quite a bit longer. I imagine it probably will make it to screens someday, but like G.I. Joe, it's probably going to take several years before it materializes.
