I recall seeing many paintings of Gladiators and Romans from the late Republican era, and they always had an orange tint due to the environment. It's fascinating how this particular painting captures the essence of that period.

Thank you! I remember that as well. Apparently red was very 'in' during that time as trade routes had opened up the saffron fields of the middle east, allowing painters to make vermillion paint instead of iron based crimson.
