It's
Wednesday and you know what that means...
ToyFarce review!
This week, we're having a look at the sixth wave of
The Lord of the Rings figures by
Diamond Select Toys, which includes the true hero of the
Lord of the Rings saga,
Samwise Gamgee and the lord of Isengard,
Saruman. (
Sadly, Sam does not come with a potato accessory...)
The
Lord of the Rings line from
DST is a line of 7" figures based on the movies. There are
6 waves of 2 figures (the first 3 waves included a beautiful 13" build-a-figure
Sauron) and a deluxe set with
Gollum. The figures are designed by
Eamon O'Donoghue and sculpted by
Gentle Giant Studios.
Samwise the Brave comes with
5 extra hands (including one with
phial), his
elven cloak,
backpack and
bag (
that hobbit does not travel light!), his
sword and
scabbard, a
shining sword (
Orcs nearby!), and his
salt box. The likeness is pretty ok, we can definitely see
Sean Astin in there. At first I thought it would be impossible to have the cape on with the backpack at the same time, but it turns out we can. It's also nice to have the option of removing all and having Sam in '
normal' attire. All he's missing is some
potatoes!
"Nooo! What's it doing? Stupid fat hobbit! You ruins it!"
"I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!"
Saruman the white is another of those 'traffic cone' kind of figures, with the long plastic dress hindering all sorts of movement from the waist down (
while having the legs articulated inside, so that it can easily go off balance when you try to stand him up... fun!).
Saruman comes with a few
extra hands, his
staff, the
Palantir orb (with
hand to hold it) and
interchangeable arms. Those interchangeable arms are actually pretty great, and enable the figure to pose with his arms bent (to hold staff or orb). Now, I kinda wish we had those interchangeable arms for
Gandalf or the
Nazgul, because they do look a bit silly with the long sleeves standing straight when bending their arms... The likeness is a bit less accurate than Sam, but there's definitely a bit of
Sir Christopher Lee in it (
RIP Sir Christopher Lee).
"Whom do you serve? - SARUMAAAAAAN!"
The next wave (wave 7) will have
Merry Brandybuck and
Pippin Took, which makes it a Hobbit wave. The
Fellowship of the Ring will then be complete. A huge thank you to
Diamond Select Toys for those figures!
