It's
Wednesday, and you know what that means:
ToyFarce review!
This week, we're having a look at the new and improved
Street Sharks figures for the
30th anniversary by
Mattel. I loved those figures as a kid, and seeing them get a '
remastered' version as an adult is crazy. I ordered those as soon as they were available, and they are even more
JAWSOME than they I remembered they were.
The
packaging is the same as the one from 30 years ago, with the figure in a
plastic cage wrapped by the packaging. I remember seeing those on the shelves as a kid and being mesmerized by them, and that feeling is still there. They're such cool toys! My old ones are somewhere in a basement, and I'm pretty sure they must not have survived 30 years as good as I did ('
lol'). I imagine they have either
disintegrated or the rubber is
all sticky, so I'm happy to get a new version!
First off,
Ripster, which was the leader of the gang, if I remember correctly. I never had that first
Ripster as a kid (I got a 'chrome' version later on), so it's great to have it now. The new figures have
more articulations that the old ones, with the addition of articulated legs, knees, ankles, and shoulders, elbows and wrists. I remember the legs were static on the old ones, so that the figures could stand up since they are very top heavy, so adding leg articulations kinda works against that, and you have to find the perfect spot for the legs to be able to stand up. Other than that,
Ripster has the same 'action features' as the old one, his
mouth opens when you press his fin, and his
hips spring back when you turn him to the side, so he can give a good punch/clothesline.

Jab, the hammerhead shark, was one I did get as a child and it's a pure nostalgia hit having it in hand again. It feels just like the old ones, except better. One weird thing is that I remembered them being
way bigger, but it might have been because I was also
way smaller myself. I've looked for comparison pictures and videos, and it turns out they're the same size, if not slightly taller.
Jab also comes with the same '
Jackhammer head-butt' action that the old figure did, with his
head extending when you bend his arm, and the
mouth opening when pressing on his fin.

Slash, the villain of the wave is definitely the least '
fun' of said wave, since he doesn't have that rubber '
shark skin feeling', so it's pretty much just a chunky plastic action figure. Still, a vast improvement on the old one, with more articulations. His
drill nose spin when you press the lever on his back, just like it did before. I remembered him having another attachment for his nose, but I'm not sure (
it's only been 30 years...). Either way, the figure does look really cool.

The next wave will have
Slammu,
Streex (
FKA Blades) and the villain
Dr.Piranoid and is already available for pre-order. I am really looking forward to that wave, because
Slammu was the first one I got as a kid, followed by
Streex, and I loved those toys so much, I can't wait to have the new versions.

Somebody let Vin Diesel know about those!
