Package Description
Rather than face a life in prison for a crime he did not commit, air force captain Nathaniel Adam volunteered to take part in the top secret "Captain Atom Project". But an atomic explosion accidentally bonded a living alien metal to Adam and sent him hurtling in time to the modern day. The transformed convict was given a new lease on life as the nuclear-powered DC super hero, captain atom.
Appearance
Captain Atom shares a body sculpt with the DCUC Series 1 Batman. It doesn’t look as overly bulky as it does on Batman, partly because I don’t have a pre-conceived vision of Captain Atom’s body type, and partly because of the silver coat of paint. Because of the silver Captain Atom looks less human, and thus looks more acceptable bulky. In addition the shiny silver reflects enough light that the size of the muscles isn’t as noticeable as the general body outline, which is good.
In general the paint application is very good on Captain Atom. There are no noticeable blemishes on my figure, and the border of his symbol is crisp and clean. DCUC is also improving on its face sculpts. Captain Atom doesn’t have as generic a face as previous figures. The face is a little flatter than other figures, and the eyebrows are furrowed as opposed to being neutral. Overall Captain Atom is a great looking figure. Some more detailing on the hands or boots could have gone a long way, because the body is fairly plain. But Captain Atom continues the high quality of this line and looks great by himself or with other figures.
Articulation
Captain Atom has standard DCUC articulation and range of motion. The head can barely look up, but it can look down and swivel side to side. His arms are able to stay at his sides, but I wish his legs could come a little closer together. The torso joint has a great range of motion forward and backward. Balance is good because of no capes or other odd features.
Poseability
Flying poses don’t work very well with Captain Atom because the head can’t look up very far. He can pull off the standard action poses for this line and its articulation, and looks good doing it. I’m not entirely sure who to pose him with but he looks good with Justice Leaguers like Firestorm. In general poses are the same as other basic figures in this line.
Final Judgment: 7
Captain Atom could benefit from some more detail besides on the face. But the shiny coat helps him stand out where detailing helps figures like Deathstroke stand out. If you aren’t collecting the whole DCUC line though, there’s not a whole lot to draw you to Captain Atom when other figures in this series like Wonder Woman stand out for the sculpt, detail, and paint a lot more. In terms of the DCUC line Captain Atom is average, but in general this is still an excellent action figure.
