DC Universe Classics Series 2 Black Manta

Package Description
Black Manta engages in undersea crime in an attempt to conquer the world beneath the waves. However, Aquaman thwarts Black Manta at every turn, a conflict that has led to Black Manta’s murder of Aquaman’s infant son. Tiring of his constant defeats, Black Manta sold his soul to the demon Neron for greater power and was thus transformed into a true denizen of the deep.

Black Manta has a new DCUC sculpt with a smaller build. The smaller build looks great, having more realistic proportions than figures like the series 1 Batman. The sculpt is typical for DCUC and DCSH for having a lot of sculpted well defined muscles, but the stance of the legs is also less wide compared to older figures. Other than the muscles though, there is no details on the body. Because of the dark black all over the body, the most noticeable thing about the figure is the outline of the body and the head. The lack of details on the body looks good because of the texture on the body which has a natural look. I was expecting before I found the figure that the black would be shiny, but the body looks and feels painted black. The texture doesn’t look like plastic at all, which is what makes the look of this figure work so well.

None of the joints are too obvious because of the small spaces between joints. There are also very few if any paint application problems because of the lack of different colors. Black Manta goes well with an established DCUC and DCSH collection, and goes especially well with Aquaman. Black Manta has a very nice realistic look translated from the comics that looks great on the shelf. Overall I couldn’t ask for a better looking Black Manta, although the gun could use a few more colors or textures.

Black Manta has standard joints for DCUC and DCSH figures of the standard body type. His arms bend ninety degrees, as do the knees. The ab joint moves up and down better than any DCUC figure before him; he can lean back and forward a surprising amount. The head cannot look up, only side to side. The staff tends to slide through the hand too easily, but it can be made to stay in his hand. The range of motion overall is fairly standard for this line everywhere except for excellent range in the torso and limited range of motion in the head.

There were a few balance problems, but for the most part it was very easy to put Black Manta into dynamic poses. The inability of the head to look up can be a problem sometimes, but I was always able to find a way around the problem. Black Manta looks great on the shelf with other villains or next to Aquaman. In short, Black Manta was able to do everything I expected in poseability except for a few details like moving the head.

Final Judgment: 7
This figure met expectations despite the limit on the head articulation. I was also surprised the figure looks as good as it does despite being mostly just a large field of black. Black Manta looks excellent and poses easily, and thus deserves a score of excellent.

If he's got a head under there, this is one of the best custom fodder figures ever made.

I bet you the Manta body is the same as blue supes, because instead of having the blue energy in the peg in his back, he probably has the back pack connection. The helmet looks like it could come off, but I don't know if there is a neck. But again I bet you its the same as blue supes.

Does anyone know what's under the Helmet if anything?? The plain body is perfect for a custom I just need to know as I haven't found one yet.
