Yesterday
we told you how
McFarlane Toys was going to be releasing a new
7" Mandarin Spawn figure. There will be two version of the figure released, a regular version and one exclusive to
Walmart that will be part of the
Gold Label Collection. On that we are clear, but where there is some confusion is what property banner the figure will actually fall under? Yesterday we reported that we think the figure will be released under their newly announced
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt line. The main reason we felt this was the case, and honestly still do is because a listing for the
Mandarin figure actually showed up online several months ago from an
overseas distributor stating it was part of the
Witcher line.
I realize some folks might have thought we said it was part of the Witcher line because in the video
Todd McFarlane released yesterday announcing the figure, he holds up packaging that is Witcher based. It's not, at least not on it's own right. We saw that packaging he held up was for the previously announced
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 7" Gold Label Collection Geralt of Rivia figure, and not the
Spawn one.
Now what we didn't see yesterday was the end of the video because I guess it was cut off on the video posted to Twitter. Since yesterday, we have seen the
Instagram version which didn't have the ending cut off. In the full version he does use the words a different property when talking about the packaging.
So we are definitely not saying the figure is 100% part of
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt line, but we still think its possible. If you watch enough of these video's Todd posts, he often seemingly just speaks off the cuff, and we think it's possible he might have misspoken and meant to say the packaging shown is for a different figure and not different property.
We also realize, at this point there is no indication that
Mandarin Spawn has any connection to the
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt video game. So why would they stick a figure of this character in a video game line it has no connection to? We don't know. Obviously the last
Spawn figure that was released at mass retail was done under the
Mortal Kombat 11 banner, since Spawn did end up appearing in that game as a playable character. I don't follow video games enough to be able to say one way or the other if there is any chance or way for
Mandarin Spawn to show up in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt game. I certainly don't know how anyone could say it's impossible that at some point he could or have some kind of connection that would make more sense to put the figure in that line. IF there is some surprise coming for that, it would be a good reason for why McFarlane wouldn't reveal now what property the Spawn figure will fall under. Also if it's not part of the Witcher line, what current McFarlane property would it make sense to put it under??
Time will only tell and honestly I am not sure why it really matters? The real news here is that the figure is coming. I am sure some might be wondering why don't they just do a full on Spawn dedicated action figure line at mass retail? I obviously can't say they won't, or even that this figure couldn't be part of such a line. I can say I've seen nothing indicating there is a such a line coming at this point. We knew
The Witcher line was coming months in advance of the official announcement as I knew this
Mandarin figure was coming before yesterday. I suppose it's possible they've managed to keep a dedicated Spawn line a complete secret, but in this day and age that doesn't seem very likely. As to why they aren't doing a dedicated Spawn line? I can only speculate, but my best guess is because it's easier to convince a Walmart to sell these Spawn figures when they are mixed in with properties that have greater notoriety. I really don't see much chance of a Walmart carrying a full blown Spawn line until there is an actual release date on the books for a new
Spawn movie. I certainly wouldn't be upset if I was wrong about that.
