McFarlane Toys Ups It's Chase Platinum Edition Figure Game With Unique Charatcers

Platinum Edition chase figures is nothing new when it comes to McFarlane Toys and their DC Multiverse line. We've been getting them in some shape or form almost since the line began. They started out as unpainted versions of the regular figures so that customizers could paint the figures themselves. Then we started getting different colored variants of the regular figures. This would be annoying when the different colored variant chase figures looked better or more accurate than the regular releases. Well now it seems Todd is taking things to the next level by doing unique characters as Platinum Chase figures.

For those not familiar with the concept, these "Chase" figures are randomly inserted into shipping cases with the regular figures. Usually it's 1 or 2 figures that get inserted into each case with the regular figures. This practice is done for a variety of reasons. It gets you out at stores hunting more for the harder to find figures. It creates a more robust secondary market value for these harder to find figures and it can even motivate some to buy an entire case of figures in order to ensure they get the more rare figures.

Shown below via greenlantern808 are some nice in-hand images for the new DC Multiverse Platinum Edition Manhunters figure. At this time there is no regular release version of the Manhunters figure, just this chase figure. As I understand it, this particular figure is being inserted in cases with the recent DC Multiverse Wave 17 which included as regular releases the New 52 Cyborg Superman and Tim Drake Robin figures.

We got a first glimpse these new unique Platinum Edition figures where coming back during WonderCon when this Manhunters figure was announced along with Platinum Edition versions of New 52 Reverse Flash and Sportsmaster. Both of those figures along with the Manhunters figure have started to see release overseas, but I am not sure what cases the later two figures are shipping in. I also don't know if these new chase figures are only being shipped 1 per case. I haven't seen an official case breakdown for wave 17.

Never-the-less it is a safe bet to assume the chase figures will be harder to get than the regular released figures in the case since that is the whole idea behind the "chase" concept. This is assuredly only going to frustrate more collectors who want these characters.

While I won't sit here and say that "chase" figures can't have some positive effects on the hobby as a whole, I have to wonder if Todd isn't taking the concept a bit to far now. Let us know what you think in the COMMENTS SECTION below.

Kind of want to get a Manhunter to make a custom 7" Magneto figure. Or maybe Onslaught.....

Todd did the exact same thing in his original SportsPicks line. There were players who were released only as chases and others who may have well as been, because it was a player in a specific team uniform (often a former team) where there was no regular version released. Want that player or that specific version? Good luck! Todd does it to generate "buzz", and because he has the (often-incorrect) notion that it adds "fun" to collecting. For a few, perhaps. For many, no.

Yeah it might generate a little buzz, but I don't rank the exclusive versions of exclusives and such as fun.

Mcfarlane makes arguably the nicest looking manhunter figure to date and they pull this nonsense. Still cant believe they're doing this..

That's how they do, even they need to do exclusives LOL

Why would you make an army builder a chase figure? That may just be the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

And isn't this like one of the very few army builders that even exist in the DC multiverse line? I was wanting to pick up a couple but If they are super hard to find there's no point in even trying, it would be a waste of time.

As a DC Multiverse completist, I find these very frustrating. Trying to keep up with all of the regular releases, exclusives, and chase variants is becoming a full time job. I'm kinda sorta hoping that the license doesn't get renewed after 2025.

Just typical McFarlane thing ....

It's an interesting way to market for Todd but he is treating his DC multiverse line like a comic book series with limited edition figures included with the regular releases which are already hard to find. I'm not a fan of this concept but it is Todd's trademark so we just have to try and get what we want.

Yeah, it's safe to say that really makes me mad. I'd definitely buy Sportsmaster and at least two Manhunter robots if I could find them. This kind of nonsense is infuriating and it might just be enough to get me to quit this line if those two figures are too hard to find or too expensive one the secondary market.

I've bought at least one version of every distinct character that this line has put out so far against my better judgement, as I still strongly prefer the Mattel DC Universe Classics line which I have almost all of. The increase to the larger 7" scale almost made me not buy any to begin with, but these types of shenanigans might just be the nail in the coffin for me.

It's unlikely that too many of these will ever even hit the sales floor of the retail establishments that they're meant for once people are aware of the demand. It won't surprise me at all if these become $200 figures on the secondary market almost immediately.
