Warner Brothers doesn't want to greenlight the film unless Arnold plays the character to ensure the film be financially successful at the box-office. Warner Brothers wanted
Triple H to take over the Conan role but over the last few months have waned to the idea. The WB knows if someone like Triple H stars as Conan there is a huge risk with the film flopping (much like The Punisher with an unknown Tom Jane as the lead).
Since
THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK under performed anywhere near 100 million at the domestic box-office, having a risky and uncharasmatic wrestler like Triple H. carrying a mega budget film would possibly hurt
KING CONAN'S chance at making the 100 million the sequel would need to earn to come into the green.
Another problem is although Triple H has some fans, he is nowhere near as popular as The Rock, who himself can't bring in more than 50 million domestic with his last two starring roles. Schwarzenegger already owns Conan much like Terminator and audiences might not connect with anyone but Arnold. Afterall, Arnold did do two Conan films.
The WB wants to wait for Mr. Governor Arnold to finish his term and then greenlight the film with his box-office name attached in the last CONAN film (which I hear will now go with the title CONAN THE KING instead of KING CONAN).
So, where does
John Milius stand on all this? Mr. Milius would love nothing more than to get his good friend back as CONAN and is warming up to the idea of ditching HHH (who was going to star in Milius' other action film) and waiting for Arnold to come back to films in a couple of short years.
