New Line is looking to breathe life back into 'Mortal Kombat' as the studio is in talks with Simon McQuoid to helm the 'Mortal Kombat' reboot. The reboot is being produced by James Wan, along with Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, and Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein through their Broken Road banner. Lawrence Kasanoff is executive producing. Greg Russo penned the most recent draft.

McQuoid is an Australian filmmaker and one of the most in-demand commercials directors in the business, working on high-profile campaigns for PlayStation, Halo, Range Rover, Beats by Dre, and other top brands.

'Mortal Kombat' is based on the classic '90s arcade game where different warriors with their own reasons for entering participated in the tournament with the eventual prize being the continued freedom of their realm, threatened with a takeover by Outworld. Among the established warriors were Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. The initial game has spawned numerous sequel games and are developed by NetherRealm Studios, owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with a team led by co-creator and creative director Ed Boon.

The reboot is the third 'Mortal Kombat' movie based off the name with the first movie being released in 1995 with Paul W.S. Anderson directing and grossing $70 million at the domestic box office. The second movie, 'Mortal Kombat: Annihilation' did not have such success as the first movie and future plans were shut down for 'Mortal Kombat' related projects.
