While I put this story in the "I'll believe when I see it" catagory, today CommingSoon.net is reporting that Sony pictures has announced a December 18, 2019 release date for the long awaited Masters of the Universe live-action movie. The movie will be directed by McG (Charlies Angles) and will follow the exploits of Prince Adam who once tranformed becomes He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe taking on the evil exploits Skeletor and his henchmen.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a modern version of He-man if done right up on the big screen, but this is one of those projects that has been riddled with problems and delays for years. I think the first time we heard about a new MOTU movie in the works was soon after the first Transformers live-action movie hit theaters in 2007. CS has a quote from McG stating the following about the movie:

“I think we want to honor the fan base, first and foremost,” he said. “We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment. That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey. It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man. We want it to be clicking on all cylinders in that regard. We’re not going to stop until we get it right.”

But despite that, I really don't have a lot of faith in his ability to bring Mattel's classic 80's toyline to life in a modern way they will make fans of old happy while bringing in a new generation of fans to the fold which would surely be needed to make for a successful box office film. Time will tell I guess. I won't really get my hopes up that this movie will actually happen until we see the studio actually lock in the leading actors to play the parts of He-Man and Skeletor. Not only will that be a strong sign the movie is actually going to happen, but it will also give us a good indication of what direction they are actually taking this project in. Who do you think should be cast to play He-Man and Skeletor?
