Lionsgate is set to unveil their highly-anticipated fantasy reboot with Henry Cavill confirmed to portray the iconic Scottish swordsman and Chad Stahelski, renowned filmmaker behind the John Wick franchise, on board to direct.
Sources reveal that this ambitious project is expected to have a substantial budget exceeding $100 million. Stahelski himself has likened the film to the action-packed intensity of John Wick but with a thrilling sword-fighting twist. The production team has their sights set on commencing filming in 2024.
The upcoming movie will draw inspiration from the original 1986 film, which featured Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown as immortal beings engaged in a relentless pursuit of power. With its time-traveling narrative and iconic tagline, "There can be only one," the original Highlander spawned four sequels and three successful TV series, including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul. Notably, the original film was accompanied by a memorable soundtrack by Queen.
Leading the production of this highly-anticipated reboot are Joshua Davis, Neal H. Moritz, known for his work on the Fast And The Furious franchise, Stahelski through his production company 87Eleven Entertainment, and Louise Rosner.
The screenplay for the new film has been penned by Mike Finch, with the late Peter S. Davis, producer of the original Highlander, spearheading the development of this exciting project. Summit acquired the rights to remake the original film back in 2008.
