THR reports that
Stanley Weston, the man credited for inventing the original
G.I. Joe passed away earlier this month at the age of 84. Taking a cue from Mattel's Barbie, Weston decided to create a boys equivalent to try and tap into what at the time was seen as an open market. Weston had previously served in the military and worked in the ad business. Eventually he started his own merchandising business named Weston Merchandising. In 1963 he sold what would eventually become G.I. Joe to
Hasbro.
Weston is also credited with having a hand in creating
ThunderCats.
