Welcome to my first comic review for Toy News International. I will introduce myself. My name is Phillip (Phil for short) and I will be the lucky one to bring you reviews of comics from DC, Marvel, and more. I hope that this will as fun as it is informing. I plan to tell you about the books that you might want to check out as well as the books you may want to avoid. Now that I’m done with that, let me go ahead and start on my first review, New Avengers #4.
To start off, I want to state that I was not 100% for this book. I read Avengers Disassembled and was not a fan of it at all. So for awhile I had dropped Avengers period. I decided it was time to give Avengers another go, I said to myself I will buy the latest issue and see if I truly enjoy it. Good news is, this was a great book, and now let me go into detail about what I enjoyed about it.
At first I was not for the current line-up at all. I honestly felt that it was lacking and somewhat a smack in the face to Avengers fans in general. After reading this issue, I am really starting to like this group in particular. I know that there will be at least two more members joining soon, so I will be looking forward as to how that will go as well.
As far as characters that truly shine in this book, the first one of course will have to go to Spider-Man. He has truly stolen the spotlight with his witty remarks. His dialogue between Luke really makes me laugh. There is also a funny conversation between Spider-Man and Spider-Woman about her name being related to his.
Luke Cage also stands out as a really great character. I honestly tried out this title for the sake of getting some Spidey exposure as well as finding out more about Luke. Over the years, I have heard Marvel has made him a much more interesting character then he was before. I am really enjoying the fact he isn’t wearing a costume, he has a real approach to his duties as an Avenger. I’m really starting to like Luke a lot from this issue alone.
The other characters in general are being presented really well. Bendis is making it really easy to enjoy the overall cast. I honestly felt that I wasn’t going to give a crap about Spider-Woman in general but he has made me like her as well.
Speaking of Bendis, I have to give him credit. He has proved me wrong here. I didn’t like Disassembled at all, but he is doing a great job on the New Avengers. I will have to take back some of the choices I made and start getting this book every month if it continues to be this good.
I was a fan of David Finch since his arc on Ultimate X-Men. (And yes I am aware of the fact Bendis wrote that arc, but I still enjoyed it) He is truly the star of this book. His pencils have so much detail in them and he is clearly one of marvel’s best artists right now. His unique style can do nothing but improve in my opinion.
So now that I have said two cents on New Avengers #4, I will have to give this comic its rank. I believe this issue gets 9 out of 10 in my book. Great story backed up with great characters and art.
I will be back for sure next month when a certain mutant is introduced to the line up. Till then, thanks for reading and come back for my next review on Seven Soldiers: The Manhattan Guardian.
