Superman: For Tomorrow
The most hyped Superman story of the year, did it live up to the hype?
This was the biggest Superman of last year and this year. Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee started a year run on Superman promising a mind blowing adventure. So I stayed on the Superman title when this was announced, knowing this would be great. So, it is finally over, so what did I honestly think about the story. To tell you the truth, I’m not so sure.
When the story first started, I was pretty interested in it. It looked like the kind of story that would truly put you into the mind of the Man of Steel. As time went on, issue after issue, I honestly found myself confused and bored of being confused about the story. It didn’t seem like it was going anywhere and was just confusing me to my last end.
By the time the JLA issue came out, I noticed I had to read all my previous issue to somewhat update myself. When I was doing this, I found the story somewhat more enjoyable. So each week before the newest issue came out, I would read all the ones I had before to refresh my mind and set myself for the mood.
I noticed this was the same with Azzarello’s Broken City storyline. His Batman run, at first I hated it. By the time the last issue came out, it all made sense. I found myself understanding the storyline in general and was impressed. The story was so much better when I read it all at once, instead of month by month.
So that is the approach I was taking towards the Superman storyline. I loved how we got to take a look inside the Man of Steel’s head. Some of his thoughts were a great view on his take on life in general. It wasn’t as easy as some might imagine. My favorite quote from the story was from the last issue. As Superman is rebuilding a new Fortress of Solitude, he thinks to himself.
“The living of life has a way of making the important a memory. And while I construct a new Fortress of Solitude, built surrounded by life instead of ice….I think about my life, about my loves, about my home, about my fight and about you…I will always be there to save you. Because I am Superman. Believe that, until the end. The end. I wonder, when it comes….who will save me?”
He is always there to save everyone no matter what, but who will save him?
His thoughts are what truly made the story; I honestly have even more respect for the character then before this story.
The problem is though, I felt the ending itself, or the last issue in general, just kind of
Honestly, that line right there made me really think a lot about the character. He is always ended so quickly. I was really into the book, it kept me thinking the whole time, but it just ended with so many questions unanswered. I read the last issue, and I’m saying to myself.” That’s all?”
The writing was nice, Azzarello can really put a lot of depth into his writing, but like I said earlier, the way he ended it felt really dry. I still enjoyed the overall story though. I am starting to read his Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. Maybe he has more in store for Superman within this book.
Now here is the superstar, Jim Lee. I know he is considered one of the best artists of all time. So what did I think of his run on Superman. It was fantastic; I’ll go ahead and say it was fantastic. Thing is though, his Superman doesn’t really look that much different from his Bruce Wayne when is comes to the faces. You could say the same for his Aquaman as well. It honestly looks like the same face. It isn’t a major deal but I was noticing it as I was reading this story.
So, now that this story is over. What did I think of it? Honestly, I liked it, but I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. I enjoyed Adventures of Superman and Action Comics much more honestly.
So out of a ten, I give this overall story a seven out of ten.
