The Boy Wizard To Debut On Legal Tender On December 7th
December 1, 2004 (Douglas) Harry Potter and his Hogwarts palls will soon be making their official premiere on legal tender. J.K. Rowling’s boy wizard and his cohorts will be appearing on a new series of postage stamps on December 7th. Coinciding with the DVD release of the latest Harry Potter epic 'The Prisoner of Azkaban,' these authorized stamps have been approved by the Royal Palace, J.K.Rowling and Warner Brothers.
The magical Harry Potter postage stamps will be issued by the British Isle of Man, and are the first licensed Potter stamps to be made available for fans and collectors worldwide. With this issue, Isle of Man continues to remain in the forefront of the philatelic world. In 2003, the English Island nation released stamps celebrating Peter Jackson’s epic, The Lord of The Rings. In recent years, they’ve also issued stamps of legendary pop stars, The Bee Gees, and a postal series designed by former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney.
The colourful set of eight postage stampswill feature scenes from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Included are images of Harry, his friends Ron Weasley and Hermoine Granger, plus Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper. Also prominent will be The Owl Post, the method by which mail is delivered in the wizardly world of Harry Potter.
Selected from dozen’s of competing worldwide postal administrations, the Isle of Man was chosen to issue the first Harry Potter postal series, due in part to their English pedigree. Although independent from the Royal Mail, each stamp image by the IOM Post must first obtain royal approval prior to issuance.
Dot Tilbury, Manager of the IOM Philatelic Bureau, said, "The Harry Potter phenomenon has captured the imaginations of children of all ages, the world over. With this magical new postal series, we hope to create a whole new generation of stamp collectors and letter writers. Maybe this will prove to be the enchanting potion that turns kids on to stamp collecting".
