Blade Runner 2049 - Prequel Short: '2036: Nexus Dawn'

"Blade Runner" took place in Los Angeles in the year 2019. The long-awaited sequel is set in the year 2049. So, what exactly happened during those intervening years?

Well, released today, is a new "Blade Runner" short film called "2036: Nexus Dawn," which is directed by Ridley Scott's son, Jake, and it offers some nice insight into Jared Leto's character, the mysterious blind, replicant architect Niander Wallace. Not only did Leto's character invented a new and improved line of free-thinking replicants in the year 2036, but was also instrumental in opening the debate on the prohibition of replicant technology, once believed to be a closed matter.

The six-minute short, which is the first of a three-part series (other chapters have been helmed by other yet-to-be-named directors), also features Benedict Wong (from "The Martian" and "Doctor Strange") as some kind of council member who, apparently, holds a great deal of power.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049 stars Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Mackenzie Davis, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Dave Bautista, Carla Juri, Lennie James, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Barkhad Abdi

Release: October 6th, 2017
