Brian Volk-Weiss Talks About His New Netflix Series The Toys That Made Us

If you grew up in the 80's playing with toys such as Star Wars, Transformers and Masters of the Universe, then you probably will want to check out a new docu-series debuting on Netflix December 22 called "The Toys That Made Us". We caught up with the show's creator Brian Volk-Weiss to ask him a little about the show and what we can expect to see from it.

TNI: First, can you tell us a little bit about the show and what can we expect from it other than just being based on toys? Is this show going to focus primarily on the people who make/made these toys, toy collectors, people who buy and sell toys or all of the above?

Brian: The showís primary focus is on the people who had the ideas and involvement with the toys we all grew up with. We did not touch too much on the buyers or sellers.

TNI: How about yourself? Are you an avid toy collector? If so what do you collect or what is your favorite toy line?

Brian: I started off just as a kid who played with toys, and then those toys became the foundation of what I would call, I guess, a collection. My main toys that I collect are Star Wars, GIJOE, Transformers, and Star Trek, though I have a LOT of toys that are not from those brands (like Robotech, Batman, etc.).

TNI: How did the idea for the show come about?

Brian: Iíve been a toy player/collector for essentially my entire life, as well as a huge history buff. So when I tried to learn more about the toys that I grew up with and found it difficult to get a lot of detailed info, I decided to try and make a show about the topic myself.

TNI: Is this a show meant to only be one season, or do you hope for more seasons after this one?

Brian: We have only been green lit for eight episodes, but if it does well then it is possible that we will get to make more.

TNI: What demographic are you shooting for with this show? The adult action figure collector who is very familiar with these toys, or is this made more for folks who donít really collect but had many of these toys growing up as a kid?

Brian: We are trying to get pretty much anyone who is into pop culture and/or nostalgia, from the hard core collectors to people who have just heard of the toys (yet didnít play with them) but want to know more.

TNI: How will the episodes break down? Will each episode deal with a specific brand such as one episode will cover Transformers and another He-Man?

Brian: Each episode covers one toy from when it was created to literally the week we locked that episode. For example, Star Wars starts off during the filming of A New Hope and goes till Last Jedi.

TNI: Can you tell us which toy brands will be covered in the show?

Brian: Star Wars, Barbie, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Transformers, Hello Kitty, Star Trek and LEGO.

We want to thank Brian for taking the time to answer our questions and look forward to checking out his Netflix show on December 22.
