A few things.
A. if he was still auditioning when he changed his mind then he there's no guarantee he would have gotten it.
B. Brandon Routh won the role, and was perfect. And the movie STILL bombed because it wasn't particularly good. So Walker really didn't miss out on anything.
C. While everyone who knew him seems to have had a very high opinion of Walker, I'm assuming the documentary doesn't mention his preference for "dating" underage girls.
Paul seemed like a cool dude, but I am so grateful this and the Cage version never happened.
