It's
Wednesday and you know what that means...
ToyFarce review!
This week, we're having a look at the latest 2 offerings from the
Star Ace Toys Batman Ninja 1/6 figure line,
Harley Quinn and the
Modern Suit version of
Batman. Yes, this is a
double review!
Star Ace Toys happened to release both these figures at the same time, and I didn't feel like doing 2 separate reviews for those (I like my variety!).
Like mentioned in the previous reviews of those figures (Batman Ninja, Joker, Catwoman), I know that the
Batman Ninja anime is very divisive: the story is
bonkers, there are
samurai fights and
mechas made of
monkeys and bats, but it's so "out there" that i can't help it: it's a
guilty pleasure. Also, I really love the character designs in it. The feudal japan take on the characters was pretty awesome.
First off,
Harley Quinn. The box is
gorgeous, like all the boxes from that line. Kudos to the packaging designer! This is the deluxe version so there is an extra insert, cleverly hidden under the first one, with the extra pieces.
Harley comes with
extra hands, a
large rattle drum (looking just like her usual giant mallet), a
gun, a
gourd, a
bomb and a
flower bomb. The "
Deluxe" parts are the
extra smiling face plate, an
extra gun and an
extra hand (to hold the extra gun).
Both
faceplates are held by
magnets and both include
moveable eyes, which is pretty great in a day and age when Hot Toys seems to be stingy with the moveable eyes...
Just like
Catwoman, Harley has a
seamless body, in all its weird squishiness. Good
articulation, but a bit hindered by the seamless body, which won't let you bend her leg too high as it just goes back down because of the rubber. For example, that pose in the
promo pics where she had a foot on her large rattle drum? That won't happen,
which is kinda sad.
The outfit has
great tailoring, another thing that S
tar Ace Toys seems to know how to do very well. Both heads look really good, even if she does look a bit more on the
anime side than the other figures. Definitely looks like a
Harley Quinn, though, so why complain?
The
Modern Suit Batman... is kind of a weird release, I'll admit. We see the 'current day' Batman only for
a few minutes in the anime, and it's really not the reason why one would watch a movie called '
Batman Ninja', but the figure did come with
light-up feature and a really nice
Bruce Wayne headsculpt, so I picked it up too. (
Wait... Bruce Wayne is Batman?!). Like
Harley, the figure comes with a second 'hidden' insert in the box, with the extra accessories for the
Deluxe version.
Batman comes with
extra hands,
2 batarangs (one with a
magnet, which we'll get back to in a minute), and a
grappling gun. The
Deluxe version adds the
unmasked headsculpt, a
spear,
2 bombs, the
quake engine and a fun
japanese arrest warrant.
The figure has a
light up feature on the
chest and in the
head. For the chest, you just need to add a small battery in the back of the figure, and move a little switch, while for the head, there is a removable part (
see pic), to add the battery in. To turn the head light on, you need to use the batarang with the magnet and just touch the forehead of the figure for the light to turn on. (
Freaking magnets, how do they work?!).
The
suit is a bit like the
Ninja version, a mix of
rubbery/faux leather, which is a bit thick and hinders articulations
A LOT, and
plastic parts on top. If you keep him in a static pose, it looks awesome. If you want more dynamic poses, it might not be for you. The figure still looks
gorgeous on a shelf though.
Another nitpick is that it's
slightly bigger than its
Ninja counterpart, while you would imagine the Ninja one to be bigger with all the armor on. It is a bit odd and he looks like he's in a different scale.
Here are all the
Batman Ninja figures from
Star Ace Toys. The next one should be a version
2.0 of the
Batman Ninja one, and there's even a version that comes with a
1/6 freaking
horse (!), but I think i will pass on those, as I am running out of space on that Batman Ninja shelf...
Time will tell!
