Package Description
When René Belloq discovers Indy and Sallah digging into the Well of Souls, he leads a group of German soldiers to the site, eager to claim the excavated Ark for himself. The soldiers hold Sallah and Indy’s crew at gunpoint while Belloq and Toht make off with the prize, leaving Indy and Marion trapped inside a pit of deadly snakes.
Appearance
The German soldiers share a new sculpt (but different face sculpts). These figures look a lot more like toys than collectors items than I was hoping because of the hard plastic appearance of the figures. There’s no differentiation of texture, and flat paint tones. There is good paint application, but some paint wash or something could have gone a long way. In general these figures are well proportioned, although their stance is a little wide.
These figures fit stylistically with other Indy figures, and look especially nice with the Ark of the Covenant. The joints are pretty well hidden in the folds of the clothes. There aren’t a whole lot of details except in the torso area, but the look works. These figures would probably look good as army builders. In general these figures look alright, but as a collector I would have preferred something that looked a little nicer.
Articulation
The soldiers have a “T” crotch and ball jointed knees and elbows. There is no ankle articulation. There is a swivel waist and ball jointed shoulders. The range of motion is generally adequate. The elbows and knees bend about 90 degrees, and they hold the guns easily.
Poseability
The soldiers look good together and with other Indy figures. They look more like toys than suits my taste, but look ok on display. Their balance is better than the Indy figure I have, but still have a little trouble. There is a little cross over potential because they are the same size as the 25th Anniversary Joes, but they’re style is a bit different.
Final Judgment: 5
I wouldn’t buy this set unless you’re planning on getting some other Indy figures as well. They’re not very good soldiers to go with other lines. There is some potential for army building, but probably not worth it with these figures. Overall I wish these were as good quality as Hasbro’s Joes, but they are ok for a movie line. Unless you’re an Indy fan, leave this on the shelf.
