Package Description
Disguised as local diggers, Indy and his loyal friend, Sallah, gain access to the excavation site of Belloq and the Germans. With Sallah’s help, Indy lowers himself by rope into the restricted map room. Inside, he uses the staff of Ra to discover the true location of the well of souls, a buried chamber that hides the ark of the Ark of the Covenant.
Appearance
Indiana Jones has a new sculpt that is in scale with Hasbro’s 25th Anniversary GI Joe figures. The cloth robe on this figure is a nice touch, and gives him a different texture than other figures in this line. The cloth around his head should be white from the movie, but it looks fine on the figure. The face is good enough that you can tell it’s Indy despite the disguise, but it is still a fairly generic face sculpt. Underneath the robe Indy is wearing his classic movie attire, and comes with a pistol and whip.
The stance of Indy’s legs are too wide, looking odd and making it hard to balance him. There’s a nice amount of detail sculpted in the clothes, but there’s little paint detail. The proportions are generally good, and the skin tone is excellent. Overall I still want a more detailed Indiana Jones figure, but considering the scale he looks pretty good.
The Ark of the Covenant is the most detailed piece in the Indiana Jones line I’ve seen so far. The amount of detail is amazing, and the gold color really shines. The only way it could have been better is if Hasbro could have actually used metal to make it, but all things considered, the Ark is great. I wish I actually had something to put in it!
Articulation
Indy’s robe is removable, but not the cloth around his head. He has a “T” crotch and ball jointed knees and ankles. There is also a swivel waist, and ball jointed shoulders and elbows. His elbows and knees bend about 90 degrees. The ankles can’t bend up because of the pants, and the range of motion in the legs is generally bad for balance.
The lid of the Ark comes off. Nothing inside though.
Poseability
Indy’s got one big problem: balance. It was hard to stand him up even standing up straight. He looks great with the Ark and with other Indy figures though once he can stand up. Dynamic poses are very hard to do. For cross display, the Indy figures are the same size as the 25th Joes, but obviously there are style differences. He looks great standing next to the Ark though, and that’s probably the reason most people would buy this set.
Final Judgment: 6
The Indiana Jones figure isn’t all that great, but it about what I expected just from looking at him in the package. The Ark is excellent though, and what really makes the set worth getting. If you’re just after Indy though, I suggest looking for another 2 pack besides this one. Combine the quality of the Ark and Indy, and I give this set a 6.
