Despite Mattel’s “occasional” problems when it comes to ordering products on their website, I am always pleasantly impressed with the overall quality and details that go into their Masters of the Universe Classics figures. With the latest addition of the King Grayskull figure (which is technically more of a re-issue) that quality continues to stand out nicely.
As most of you probably know, the character of King Grayskull who originally appeared in the 200x Masters of the Universe animated series is the originator of the He-Man power and the person for which Castle Grayskull is named after. The essence of his strength is that which empowers the sword of power, which is the foundation for the mondern-day He-Man's abilities. Grayskull, whose first name is D’Vann, rose to greatness by taking on the world oppressors known as the Snake-Men and their leader King Hiss. Grayskull himself looks very much like the modern day He-Man, only he has longer hair and wears a red cape.
The figure, like all Masters of the Universe Classics figures, was sculpted in beautiful detail by the Four Horsemen and was originally offered as a
2008 San Diego Comic Con exclusive, although this new re-issue does have a few differences. The most notable difference is the color of the cape. The original SDCC version had a brown cape while the cape on the re-issue is red. The new figure also comes with a couple different accessories. Besides the power sword which splits into two parts and the traditional He-Man shield, the re-issue comes with a second power sword that has a transparent bluish mystical look and a blue orb with the same sparkly look. The Ax which came with the SDCC version is not included in this re-issue. The orb itself is somewhat disappointing since there isn't a lot you can do with it. It is basically just a blue marble. The re-issued figure has a more metallic-looking finish on parts of its costume than the SDCC version had.
One other major difference between the SDCC version and this new re-issue is the packaging. The original SDCC figure came in a special packaging replicating Castle Grayskull while the re-issue has the standard MOTU Classics cardback.
The articulation for this figure is the same standard you find on most MOTUC figures. The figure has a removable cape that fits pretty securely when you attach it to the back of the figure. I also like that he can carry his sword on his back even with the cape on.
If you already have the SDCC version, I can’t really say there are enough differences to warrant you purchasing this one. But if you missed out on that original release, I definitely recommend you try picking this one up when it goes on sale at
Mattycollector.com on November 15.
