I mean if it's this blank figure does that prove it for custom painting?
I've got Nightwing and Red Hood from this series and I'm happy with them. After customizing red hood with holsters and trigger hands hes my favorite red hood figure. Looking forward to Robin and Batgirl as well. But yeah....not feeling the unpainted "platinum" variant at all.
Finger guns are really hilarious.
Todd's variants in the past have been fine. Currently, the issue seems to be how variants aren't sprinkled in but in huge globs of inventory which is why people are upset. He has unpainted chases in his other lines but it's more spread out. Even previous chase figs like silver gorilla grodd, lighter blue dr fate...were sprinkled in pretty decently with the regular figs. As a collector for 3 decades, variants always do fairly to very well. The complaints mostly stem from how easily (at least lately) it is to get an unpainted figure. I've talked to multiple comic book shop owners that have all gotten half to a tad over half their order coming in as unpainted variants. So there's an issue with overproduction or how they are mixed in with regular versions not so much hating variants altogether. If anything a no color figure would seem to fit a variant that is very limited in production...but that's my personal preference.
It goes to show how times have changed... Years past if collectors ordered figures and got a chase, variation or unpainted. It was something big and you felt like you got lucky. Now, it's all complaints, returns and arguing about not getting what they wanted. If I ordered a figure and got an unpainted figure then I would keep it and order another one. Put them side to side and show they off in your collection.
Collectors can be manipulated, but not to the point of being exploited. Todd puts out some terrific figures, but all of these lame variants are really off putting to a significant number of collectors. It's a blatant money grab, which I'm sure Todd needs because paid a lot for DC's licensing rights. Now they have DC Direct, which they haven't even addressed other than releasing some things that were in the pipeline and left overs that had not been sold yet. I'm waiting to see if Todd will continue DC Direct's Batman Animated Adventures' 6" line, which collectors love. Several figures were in the pipeline including Batman Who Laughs, Talon, Hush, Thomas Wayne, Vampire Batman, & unmasked Catwoman.
Kinda agree with Chris. These are getting out of hand.
Mother of God...Todd. If ANYONE at McFarlane Toys is reading comments! Tell Todd to read amazon, gamestop reviews on his Swamp Thing platinums. Unpainted figs are driving people insane. People are returning unpainted figs. They're not chases but just make ppl have a "wtf" look upon receiving them. And no Platinum variants of eyes looking up or double platinum variants of eyes looking down either! Holy Christ.....
This McF fig....
Is "Not" my cup of tea.....
However.......Good, good review ;^)
So now you pay a premium to buy unpainted figures? This is pure insanity. No thanks.
