BILL WILLINGHAM AND SHAWN McMANUS BRING BACK
THE SANDMAN'S THESSALY IN NEW VERTIGO MINISERIES
Thessaly, the last of the Thessalian witches from Neil Gaiman's classic tale THE SANDMAN: A GAME OF YOU, weaves her spell once more in THE SANDMAN PRESENTS: THESSALY — WITCH FOR HIRE. This 4-issue VERTIGO miniseries reunites the creative team from THE SANDMAN PRESENTS: THE THESSALIAD: Eisner Award-winning writer Bill Willingham (FABLES) and artist Shawn McManus (SWAMP THING).

"No man is an island unto himself, but one woman is — or so she thinks," says Willingham. "Thess is alone in this world and she likes it that way. So then how is her life suddenly so screwed up when an old friend starts meddling in it for 'her own good?'"

Willingham adds, "The second-best part about writing this follow-up to the first series is that I get to work with Shawn McManus again. What's first? Okay, I can't think of anything better just now, but I don't want Shawn to get more of a swelled head than he already (quite rightfully) has."

WITCH FOR HIRE finds Thessaly moving from place to place, due to repeated, unexplained attacks by monsters. The new story also includes the return of Fetch, the ghost from THE THESSALIAD.

Thessaly's previous adventure (last year's 4-issue miniseries THE SANDMAN PRESENTS: THE THESSALIAD) is collected next month in THE SANDMAN PRESENTS: TALLER TALES (AUG030282), a 224-page VERTIGO trade paperback that also includes these Willingham-written tales: THE SANDMAN PRESENTS: MERV PUMPKINHEAD, AGENT OF D.R.E.A.M., THE SANDMAN PRESENTS: EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DREAMS… BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK, and THE DREAMING #55. THE SANDMAN PRESENTS: TALLER TALES is a suggested for mature readers title scheduled to be in stores on October 15 with a cover price of $19.95 U.S.

Other VERTIGO titles written by Willingham and available now include:

• FABLES: LEGENDS IN EXILE TP (STAR17300)
• FABLES: ANIMAL FARM TP (STAR19073)
• PROPOSITION PLAYER TP (STAR186680)

PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY GIVES
THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS A STARRED REVIEW
The September 8 issue of Publisher's Weekly gives VERTIGO's original hardcover graphic novel THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS a coveted "starred" review. The review states that "longtime comics fans will notice plenty of inside jokes in 'The Heart of a Star,' but most of this book is a red carpet — or perhaps a Persian rug — rolled out for [Neil] Gaiman's prose readers to see his visions turned into lush, dramatic images."

As a reminder, the July 28 issue of Publisher's Weekly featured an unprecedented ten-page article on Gaiman and THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS.

NEIL GAIMAN'S CORALINE WINS 2003 HUGO AWARD
Neil Gaiman's novella Coraline, published by HarperCollins with illustrations by Dave McKean, was recently awarded the 2003 Hugo Award for best novella. The awards were presented on Saturday, August 30, at Torcon 3, the 61st World Science Fiction Convention in Toronto.

DC TO SHIP CAPER MAXISERIES WITH
SUGGESTED FOR MATURE READERS LABEL
CAPER, the 12-issue maxiseries written by critically acclaimed and award-winning writer Judd Winick (OUTSIDERS, BLOOD AND WATER, Pedro and Me), will arrive in comic book stores with a suggested for mature readers label. Please note that CAPER #1 and 2 were mistakenly solicited without this label.

"As a fan of The Godfather and other crime movies, I think Judd is truly capturing the flavor of the crime genre with this series," says Dan DiDio, DC's VP — Editorial. "It's something I'm really looking forward to reading."

CAPER's first story arc focuses on brothers Izzy and Jacob Weiss, button men for San Francisco's turn-of-the-century Jewish Mafia. They’ve done dirty work for years, but now their Boss has pushed them too far. It's about crime. It's about the double cross, the triple cross, the lies, and the murder. It's a caper!

This powerful new maxiseries is organized into three 4-issue story arcs. CAPER’s first arc features art and covers by Farel Dalrymple (Pop Gun War), while the following two arcs are illustrated by artists John Severin (DESPERADOES: QUIET OF THE GRAVE) and Tom Fowler (Grendel), respectively.

Retailers: CAPER #1 will be announced as order adjustable in the September 25 edition of Diamond Dateline.

CAPER #1 (AUG030204) is a suggested for mature readers title solicited in the August issue of Previews (Volume XIII #8). It is scheduled to arrive in stores on October 29 with a cover price of $2.95 U.S.

CAPER #2 (SEP030243) is a suggested for mature readers title solicited in the September issue of Previews (Volume XIII #9). It is scheduled to arrive in stores on November 26 with a cover price of $2.95 U.S.

REVIEWS FROM THE INTERNET
BATMAN: DEATH AND THE MAIDENS #2
"Add Greg Rucka's name to a very short list...a list of writers who can handle the enigmatic and lofty character of Ra's Al Ghul well." — TheFourthRail.com/Critiques on Infinite Earths

BEWARE THE CREEPER
"If you didn’t read this miniseries you certainly missed one of the most compelling best told stories of the year." — 411Mania.com

"This series, quite masterfully, ended itself both with a surprise twist and a satisfyingly logical conclusion." — BrokenFrontier.com

"You're going to have to read the fifth and final issue of BEWARE THE CREEPER." — Cinescape.com

CATWOMAN #22
"Brubaker and Stewart are just at the absolute top of their game." — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

THE FLASH #201
"Best of the Week! I was blown away by the first issue of this revamp." — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

"THE FLASH # 201 is one of the most finely constructed issues of a super-hero comic book that I’ve read in a long time. Everything in this issue works, and works on multiple levels. My highest recommendation." — Chud.com

FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE #3
"In this issue, a real conflict arises that brings a much-needed sense of focus and direction to the story. The dialogue is as snappy and hilarious as ever, but there's also a shift to a more intense tone in this issue that's sudden and packs a powerful punch as a result." — TheFourthRail.com/Critiques on Infinite Earths

GOTHAM CENTRAL #11
"[Brian] Hurtt really knocks this one out of the park, and does a great job on [Ed] Brubaker's script." — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

THE DEMON: DRIVEN OUT #1

"If [Josh] Dysart, [Pop] Mhan and the rest can handle the two main characters of previous DEMON stories as well as they do their new protagonist, DRIVEN OUT could turn out to be quite a fun ride. — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

HUMAN TARGET #1
"If this issue were filmed as a pilot for a new HBO series, it would be a overnight runaway hit. I also can't say enough about the superb artwork of Javier Pulido…one of the best comics produced this summer, perhaps even this year." — Cinescape.com

JLA/AVENGERS #1
"This is good old-fashioned super-hero crossover stuff, in the vein of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS or Secret Wars… everything I was hoping for." — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

"This book feels important, in the same way that CRISIS was important, in the same way that Busiek's own Avengers Forever was important, and in the same way that KINGDOM COME and Earth X were important." — Cinescape.com

"The visual detail and energy that Pérez brings to this story is stunning." — TheFourthRail.com/Critiques on Infinite Earths

THE LOSERS #3
"Judging from the first three issues, I'm guessing that by the end of the year, I'll be calling LOSERS my favorite comic-book." — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

PLANETARY #16
"Warren Ellis and John Cassaday get their genre-fiction conspiracy story rolling again, and it's as fascinating as ever." — TheFourthRail.com/Critiques on Infinite Earths

THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS SPECIAL
"There are so few sure things in life: Water's wet, sun will rise in the morning, and Neil Gaiman writing SANDMAN will always be great." — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

"This special incentive comic was a smart marketing move on DC's part, as it gives readers a glimpse of what to expect from the far more expensive volume due out later this month. Of course, I didn't really need the advance look. The book is written by Neil Gaiman. I don't need to know anything else." — TheFourthRail.com/Critiques on Infinite Earths

WONDER WOMAN #195
"Pick of the Week. The best issue of WONDER WOMAN I’ve read in... well, since the Pérez days, at least. Rucka makes the fine choice to focus on the Ambassadorial side of Diana, and it really really works. Excellent." — ComixExperience.com

"Best of the Week! Drew Johnson…demonstrates he's more than just a good super-hero artist. His work here is leaps and bounds beyond what he's done in the past. Rucka brings Wonder Woman back to the roots Pérez set out for her with this new status quo, and in the process, the writer brings credibility to a timeless super-hero concept." — TheFourthRail.com/Critiques on Infinite Earths

"The first issue of Greg Rucka's WONDER WOMAN reminds me of The West Wing by way of ASTRO CITY. He's made me see the appeal of Wonder Woman, something that few writers have ever managed." — TheFourthRail.com/Snap Judgments

"Those who read last year's WONDER WOMAN: THE HIKETEIA (released in softcover last week) will already know what a strong grasp Rucka has on the character; now, lucky us, we get to see it every month." — NinthArt.com
