He ate the Yomi Yomi no Mi devil fruit which gave him the power to return to life after his death, and he now has devloped powers to control the souls of others, and himself. Brook was originally part of the Rumbar Pirates but died, and since his soul took so long to return he came back as a skeleton with his iconic afro.
