"We must join with Him, Gandalf. We must join with Sauron. It would be wise, my friend."

"Tell me, 'friend,' when did Saruman the Wise abandon reason for madness?"Sideshow Collectibles and New Line Cinema are proud to present the third piece in the series of The Lord of the Rings Dioramas, The Treachery of Saruman Diorama. The diorama captures the wizards in the moments after Saruman has revealed his true intent and begins his attack on Gandalf. This immense diorama is sculpted in approximately 1:9 scale, with the tips of Saruman's throne reaching approximately 21 inches high. Each piece is cast in high quality polystone, hand-finished, and hand-painted to exacting standards. The Treachery of Saruman Diorama is sure to be the centerpiece of your Lord of the Rings collection!

In the Third Age, the Valar sent the Istari to aid the Free Peoples of Middle-earth in their struggle against Sauron. Taking on the appearance of aged men, these five wizards were not meant to use their power in direct confrontation with the Dark Lord, but rather sought to use their wisdom and influence to encourage Men in their continued resistance against the forces of evil. While each of the five wizards had great skill and power, they revealed their true nature and abilities sparingly and only in times of great need. The Istari were each given a rank within the Order, along with an accompanying color. The most powerful of the wizards, and the head of the Order, was Saruman the White. Because of his vast knowledge and expertise in the lore of Elven-rings and the methods of Sauron, he was eventually made the head of the White Council and given the key to the tower of Orthanc in the fortress of Isengard, in hopes that he would from there aid the men of Gondor and Rohan in their conflict with the servants of the Enemy.

As Saruman delved deeper into his study of the devices of the Dark Lord, a desire began to grow within him to possess the power of the One Ring for himself. Keeping his research a secret from the other members of the White Council, Saruman began searching for the Ring and fortifying Isengard with an army of Orcs and Wild Men from the nearby hills. As his pride and lust for the Ring grew stronger, he made contact with Sauron himself through the seeing stone of Orthanc--and being deceived by the Dark Lord, Saruman foolishly pledged himself to his service.

The treachery of Saruman was revealed when Gandalf the Grey, through his friendship with the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins of the Shire, confirmed the existence of the One Ring and came immediately to Isengard, seeking the counsel of his chief. With the location of the Ring revealed at last, Saruman openly declared his decision to join forces with the Dark Lord Sauron. Standing firm in the face of madness and betrayal, Gandalf refused to pledge his support and brought his staff to bear against his former comrade. High in the tower of Orthanc, an epic confrontation began between the two mighty wizards--with the fate of Middle-earth hanging in the balance.
