As a member of the Istari, Gandalf is one of five great wizards sent to Middle-earth during the dark Third Age. The mission of the Istari is to advise and assist the forces of light in the destruction of the dark lord Sauron. The powerful wizards appear as aged Men to guide Middle-earth through persuasions of respect and wisdom, rather than fear or demand. As with all the Istari, Gandalf possesses great mental and physical strength, and though he has lost much of his magical ability in mortal form, the abilities that remain are tied to his staff. By wisdom, strength, and magic, Gandalf aids the peoples of Middle-earth against the powerful evil of Sauron.

Trusted mentor and guide of Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf falls into the Mines of Moria defending the Fellowship from certain death against a demon Balrog. When his first mortal body is destroyed, Gandalf the Grey is reborn as Gandalf the White, and returned to complete his critical task and replace the Istari leader Saruman as the head of the White Council. Gandalf defeats the traitorous Saruman, destroying Saruman's staff and Uruk-hai army, and ending his reign as head of the White Council.

Saruman defeated, Gandalf the White travels to the City of Kings, Minas Tirith, to lend aid to the defense against Sauron's army. Gandalf is instrumental in the battle, with great prowess in battle and serving to rekindle the hope and courage of the besieged defenders. Gandalf is the answer to Sauron's Nazgul, bringing the light where the Nazgul swoop in with darkness and despair. Gandalf the White is Middle Earth's greatest defender, preserving what can be saved while buying time for Frodo to destroy the Ring.
