As a member of the Istari, Gandalf is one of five great wizards sent to Middle-earth during the dark Third Age. The mission of the Istari is to advise and assist the forces of light in the destruction of the dark lord Sauron. The powerful wizards appear as aged Men to guide Middle-earth through persuasions of respect and wisdom, rather than fear or demand. As with all the Istari, Gandalf possesses great mental and physical strength, and though he has lost much of his magical ability in mortal form, the abilities that remain are tied to his staff. By wisdom, strength, and magic, Gandalf aids the peoples of Middle-earth against the powerful evil of Sauron.

Trusted mentor and guide of Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf falls into the Mines of Moria defending the Fellowship from certain death against a demon Balrog. When his first mortal body is destroyed, Gandalf the Grey is reborn as Gandalf the White, and returned to complete his critical task and replace the Istari leader Saruman as the head of the White Council.
