To Pre-Order, Or Not To Pre-Order...That Is The Question Hasbro Seems Confused About

In recent days there seems to be a fair amount of confusion going on within Hasbro about how pre-orders will be handled for both their Star Wars and Indiana Jones lines.

Earlier this month after their last Star Wars live-stream, Hasbro released this vague statement through various influencer's:

Following the Star Wars fanstream on Wednesday, we wanted to clarify the availability of the revealed items. We've heard your earlier feedback on the number of pre-orders, and we have decided to adjust the number of pre-orders, and we have decided to adjust the number of them in the new year. With the expectation of Star Wars: The Black Series Phase II Clone Trooper Jesse, all of the items revealed on February 1 will not be going on pre-order. The products will be available on shelf and online during the scheduled dates. Please see those dates below and note they are subject to change.

Star Wars: The Black Series Scout Trooper Premium Electronic Helmet - Available: Summer 2023

Star Wars: Retro Collective The Mandalorian Prototype - Available: Spring 2023

Star Wars: The Black Series Rebel Trooper (Endor) - Summer 2023

Star Wars: The Black Series Phase II Clone Commander Jesse - Available for pre-order on March 16 @ 10am ET as part of Walmart's Collector Con and on-shelf this Summer.

Then yesterday Hasbro revealed several new Indiana Jones products for their 6" Adventure Series line and 3.75" Retro Collection lines, once again indicating to the media that those products would not be going up for pre-order. That they would simply just be released on shelf at some vague future date.

Now it is true that collectors have grown frustrated with Hasbro over the very long pre-order windows they started using during the pandemic which was due to the shipping delays and uncertainty that resulted from all that. However the fact Hasbro phrased this move to stop pre-orders as something they were doing for the collectors benefit seemed ridiculous to me. No one forces a person to pre-order. If someone would rather just wait for an item to show up and buy it, they can do that now. Taking the pre-order option away so people don't have a choice seems like something that will only hurt the small etailer businesses and benefit the big box stores.

So when this announcement was first made about the Star Wars stuff, I decided to reach out to some of the etailers that sell Hasbro product and ask them what they thought about this move. To my surprise, they told me that no one at Hasbro had informed them of this move. I even had them verify with their Hasbro reps, and they were told that pre-order windows WOULD BE HAPPENING for the product in question.

Then yesterday after the Indiana Jones news, I followed up again with an etailer who told me they once again were being told by Hasbro reps that pre-orders would be happening for these products. When I asked the etailer to try and get clarification from their Hasbro reps on why the media was being told one thing and they were being told something else, he said the rep told them that the info sent out to the media was confusing and poorly worded. The Hasbro retailer rep asked the Hasbro PR people to fix it and they just re-released the same information.

So at this point I don't know what to really tell you. This seems to be a case where Hasbro's right hand isn't communicating or really knows what it's left hand is doing. Whether the stuff Hasbro is telling the media is true or what Hasbro's retailer reps are telling etailers is, I couldn't say, but I guess time will tell.

I don't see how Hasbro could stop an etailer from putting up pre-orders. BBTS or whoever orders how many ever boxes they are buying of a particular wave. They can then list those figures for pre-order that they put in a purchase order for on their site, no? If the customer pre-order number goes over their merchant purchase order, they just go back to the manufacture and put in an additional purchase order. Isn't that how it works?

This is a great example of the recent, or not so recent incompetence of Hasbro. The reason these products get made is to have them sell to as many consumers as possible so to make the availability as accessible as possible would make sense. There seems to be a communication problem within Hasbro about this issue and needs some clarification.

Unfortunately this does not surprise me.

Sounds like a poorly veiled plot to kill e-tailer interest in their product or outright kill smaller e-tailers so that folks HAVE to buy from big box or Hasbro Pulse.

This absolutely smells of corporate incompetence. However, another scenario which wouldn't surprise me one bit is that it's a case of Hasbro talking out of both sides of its face.

I could see a world where big box retailers are shrinking / cancelling their orders due to lower foot-traffic sales. E-tailer availability of product and ease of pre-orders becomes an easy scapegoat for cutting into their sales. So Hasbro starts to announce / tell big box purchasers that there aren't going to have as many pre-orders which puts things back in their favor. Big box is happier and maintains order levels. Meanwhile, Hasbro whispers in the ear of E-tailers that it's just a PR snafu and all is well. That way Hasbro doesn't have bad blood which affects the buying trends of the E-tailers either.

Admittedly, it's a bit of a tin-hat theory, but one that would not surprise me given a lot of the stupid decisions Hasbro has been making lately in the name of maximizing profit.

I think preorders are still coming just closer to actual releases dates so we just see the products ffirst.i for one want whole cases shown and go up for preorder so I have the choice but I still plan to wait on most products. The amount of preorders I have compared to past years is way less and that is by design for me. I am playing the long game.

Corporate incompetence on display...and you can bet the people doing this are NOT the ones who are being fired.

I'm glad you're confused still. Makes me feel less dumb about going crosseyed trying to figure this out.
