Deadline has announced a script development by brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman for a new live-action film within the Lego Ninjago franchise, set to be produced by Universal Pictures.

The announcement regarding the new Ninjago follows the news that Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish have been engaged to direct live-action Lego films for Universal. Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians will serve as producers for The Lego Group. Matt Reilly, Universal’s Executive Vice President of Production Development, along with Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development, will supervise the project for the studio.

Ninjago was launched in 2011 as a series of construction toys centered around a ninja theme, subsequently transforming into a significant multimedia franchise. The narrative centers on a group of young ninja warriors dedicated to safeguarding their realm, referred to as Ninjago, from various malevolent forces. In addition to a range of video games, books, and graphic novels, Lego Ninjago is prominently featured in the immensely popular animated series Ninjago, which aired for 15 seasons on Cartoon Network and Netflix. Capitalizing on this success, Lego extended the Ninjago brand into other mediums, including the 2017 release of The LEGO Ninjago Movie by Warner Bros. The Ninjago universe is further showcased through attractions at amusement parks such as Legoland.

Who the hell is this for? Kids who like ninjago aren't clamoring for a live action anything. And adults aren't interested in live action regurgitations of cartoons. What a stupid move. But it's by universal, so it doesn't surprise me. They don't generally think things through.

I think something I saw someone say about the Minecraft movie after its trailer dropped also applies here: these will be movies made not for any actual audience, but for shareholders.
