It's
February and love is in the air! Over the past few years, collectors have noticed a strange phenomenon: new
NECA action figures mysteriously showing up on
Best Buy's website without any prior announcements.
No press releases, no teasers, no fanfare, nothing... just figures materializing on
Best Buy's website like some kind of covert toy operation. It's almost as if
NECA doesn’t want anyone to know about their
secret romance with
Best Buy...
ToyFarce investigated.
"
It started with the TMNT: The Last Ronin Synja Patrol Bot..." remembers a fan, who did purchase it from
Best Buy. "
There was also the TMNT: The Last Ronin Synja Commando with Mousers set last year, and now the few items that popped up on Best Buy's website during the weekend, including the Hammer Films: Horror of Dracula (1958) Van Helsing figure, the Ultimate "Striped Suit" Beetlejuice figure, the Jaws 50th Anniversary Ultimate Matt Hooper (Amity Arrival) figure, the Robocop (1987) Poster Series figure or the TMNT x Universal Monsters Shredder as Dracula figure. No pictures, no announcement from NECA. It does sound odd, doesn't it?"
Toy collectors have been speculating about the nature of this peculiar partnership:
Is Best Buy a secret fling that NECA is too embarrassed to admit? Is NECA playing hard to get, only acknowledging Best Buy's existence once the figures have moved on to other retailers?
When asked for comment,
NECA remained elusive: "
We have no idea what you're talking about. Best Buy? NECA figures? Never heard of it. Any claims that our figures mysteriously appear there without announcement are purely coincidental. We certainly did not leave them there in the dead of night under the cover of darkness. That would be absurd. And no, we will not be answering any more questions on this matter. In fact, we have our own 'Perfect Pairings' event going on, and Best Buy is not involved in it!"
Meanwhile,
Best Buy has refused to confirm or deny anything, simply winking at us while answering: "
Look, it's complicated. We and NECA have an understanding. We don't talk about it, and neither should you. Sometimes, figures end up there, sometimes they don't. Maybe we texted first. Maybe they ghosted us. Who's to say? But please respect our privacy during this difficult time."
At this point, collectors can only wonder:
will NECA and Best Buy ever make their relationship official? Or will their secret toy drop affair remain one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Ultimate action figure world? Only time will tell!
