Package Description
Born the son of the tyrannical Darkseid, Lord of the planet Apokolips, Orion was adopted by the kind ruler Highfather and raised on the neighboring planet New Genesis as part of a truce between the two worlds. Orion’s feral nature made him the fiercest fighter of all the New Gods and ultimately helped him defeat Darkseid’s plans to control the universe.

Appearance
Orion has a new sculpt (that he shares with Red Tornado and Batman). He has a very generic body like most DC Superheroes sculpts, and there are very few details worth mentioning because of the plain red costume without the harness. The red is a nice color, and I appreciate the paint wash, but without the harness he’s not visually appealing. The helmet adds a lot to the character and looks to be about the right size for his head. The paint is generally well applied, although I did have to fix one of the “ears” on the helmet to make them symmetric.

Visually this figure is uninteresting until he is wearing his harness. The harness has a lot of details sculpted in, and a few paint colors applied besides the gold for a few buttons. It’s comic accurate as far as I can tell, although it does look a little odd that he is crouching in the harness. The harness fits well onto his body and doesn’t look contrived, and also adds a different texture to the figure that differentiates him from other figures. The paint so far as I can tell is flawless on the harness. However this figure is the one that had the most quality control issues of the five. As mentioned earlier there was an ear I had to fix, there’s a splotch of blue paint on the shoulder of mine, and when I first opened Orion there was a black mark on his chin too. These figures are generally well made, but like Toybiz you need to look out for the good ones.

The joints are generally hidden by the harness, and he’s generally well proportioned and nothing is out of place. I like this muscular body better on Orion than I did Batman because it makes more sense for him to be buff because he’s not human. The style the figure is made in goes with DCSH and DCUC figures well, so there’s no problems there. Overall, Orion looks solid and well made, but he’s not an eye catching figure. Considering he’s an adaptation of a character though, I’m satisfied with the way Orion turned out and I’m fine with him being the only version we get out of this line.

Articulation
Orion has articulation that was standard on DCSH figures. What’s worth mentioning is that his stance is wide, though not as bad as Batman. There is a much improved range of motion in the head, but the helmet keeps him from looking up much at all. The ab crunch does not move much at all. The harness snaps on easily and stays in place. Other than that, joints get the range of motion they were designed to, even though he probably won’t be moving much in the harness.

Poseability
Orion has good balance with and without the harness. He can also move his legs some in the harness, and once a sturdy position is found he probably won’t fall down. He also does well in dynamic poses, although he’ll probably remain in the harness much of the time. Orion goes well by himself or with an existing DCSH collection. The costume is plain though, and so he will probably remain in the harness to remain visually appealing until some more New Gods are made. Overall, its easy to put him in good poses, but he could really use some appropriate characters to display with. In the mean time, Orion looks good with Justice League characters that have already been made by DCSH or DCUC.

Final Judgment: 7
My only problems with the figure are the plain costume (which is not fault of the designer) and that he can’t hold a Mother Box. Orion has a solid design and good paint job. The harness in particular is excellent and well executed. I have a hard time getting excited about this figure though, but I think the only reason is the plain red costume. Considering the excellent sculpt and good paint job, in addition to the accessories and good balance, I think this figure deserves a 7 even if I’m not a big fan of the character.
